I was going to get some GM Synchromesh but when I was at the GM parts store, they said they didn't have any. When I went to Autozone afterwards, I saw that they had a Penzoil Synchromesh that they say is the same as GM's synchromesh. Is this stuff any good or as good as the GM stuff?

What weight is recomended for the 5 speed AWD tranny? Does the penzoil stuff not come in different weights like the gm stuff ?? thanks

I saw this stuff at Autozone as well. Man it sure is cheap.

I didn't want to bother tryin it unless I knew the weight. I asked and of course they don't know shit.

Did anyone find out what the weight is?

I thought there is no specific weight... you just get it and throw it in. Which is why there is no weight number on the bottles.

In yahoo search Pennzoil Synchromesh. Try to click on the link (its a pdf and didn't work for me). If it doesn't work click on "view as html" beside the link and it should bring up some info on the synchromesh as well as some p/n's.

Well, I'm finding interesting things. A search for Pennz Synchromesh brought up a Quaker State Synchromesh pdf page (god, how I hate Acrobat).. wth the same information as the Pennzoil Synchromesh pdf, once I found that. They say it meets Chrysler spec MS-9224, or GM spec 9985648 or 9985577. Searches for this stuff are ongoing.
All I find in the Chrysler Talon shop manuals is Mopar Hypoid GL-4, 75W-90 or 75W-85W, with no distinction about which is best where.
As I find more, I'll post.
Christ, no wonder dsmbob is like that.

Aggh! I just went to the Chevy dealership a couple of days ago and paid a little over $11 a quart for GM Syncromesh, I hope this stuff is as good as they say it is. If I spill any I'm gonna siphon it up, put it back in the container, and lock it up in a vault. Almost $40 after tax for 3 quarts of this stuff! I wish I would have known about Autozone selling it.

I have been running the pennzoil syncromesh friction modifier in my 1G. I too shopped around for the GM version, but when I read up on the Pennzoil it was indeed a suitable substitute for the GM. a generic if you will. Plus nobody around here had the GM or redline in stock. Has been working fine.

All my years in dsm i've used BG synchro shift. Never had any trouble out of the product. Here is some info on it.
BG Syncro Shift II is an all synthetic gear lubricant specially formulated for front wheel drive manual transmissions. It does not sacrifice any performance as does engine oil, ATF or conventional gear oil. It provides required thermal stability, low-temperature fluidity, hot rattle suppression, noise dampening at operating temperature, outstanding extreme pressure characteristics, shear stability, smoother shifting characteristics, wear reduction (synchronizer, gears, bearings, shift fork), seal compatibility, and reduced maintenance costs. This product is a part of the BG TDC® program. You can only find this product at an authorized dealer. I know of a couple i sell it to off hand that would love to supply you with a product that work. If there are any question on other product drop me a line.

Thank you for the bandwidth,
BG Man

One thing I have to say about GM synochromesh: Holy God it is friggen awesome! MY transmission I thought for sure was dead. 1st to 2nd under heavy load took like 3 full seconds to shift, 2nd to 3rd was like another 3 followed by a HUGE grind, and then 3rd to 4th was starting to get bad. I was positive my tranny was blown. I changed the fluid and about a week later things started to smoothen out. Now my transmission is still not shifting perfect, but I can rip through the gears 439874 x faster then I used to. That $40 you just spent will be worth it. Dont expect anything right away though. Give it a few days before you start noticing any difference.

Its nice that i only pay 6.22 per bottle of Gm syncromesh
Nice working for GM

I read this form about 3 days ago and i was experiencing some mild tranny problems where it wouldnt shift into 2nd untill under 20mph but not my tranny shifts like butter at all gears except reverse which hasnt gotten that much better but it is still an improvemnet i was sure that i would need a rebuild becasue of the 2ng gear shift fork so it was definatley worht the investment of 15 dollares at auto zone or 12 if you work there like me and again i say"Praise the lord syncromesh is here "

I have a nasty grind into third, could only double clutch in. tried gm syncro mesh, made all other gears shit awesome, but third just got worse, only thing that can fix it is a rebuild.

I can get mobile 1 synthetic gear oil for 3 bucks a bottle , I plan on putting it in my rebuilt tranny this weekend, do you guys have anything good or bad to say about this product ?(mobile 1 75-90 full synthetic gear oil)

Well, their data sheet says lots about how good it is for gearsets and hypoid application, but doesn't mention synchromesh anywhere. I don't know that it has any friction modifiers such as are required for synchros.

I don't think it'd make anything blow up, you just may not shift so smoothly as a synchro-specific lube would.

Follow up: Well, after 6 months... I finally put this stuff in the tranny. This stuff is AMAZING. Shifting into 1st is effortless. The gears cuts in like cheese and my 3rd gear isn't grinding at faster shifts. I heard that it takes time for the gear oil to break in. So I think after a little bit more the gear isn't going to grind at all. Its actually getting better and better as I drove home after 50 miles.

sorry to bring up an old thread, but does anything have to be added to BG Syncroshift II when ur using it in a 1g AWD 5spd transmission and transfer-case? Or can you put it straight in there. Thanks.

And this is an updated link for the Pennzoil Synchromesh fluid.

http://www.pennzoil.com/products/technical/datasheets.html

EDIT: Link only goes to a “search” so select Pennzoil USA, then “gear oil” then select “Synchromesh Fluid (USA,English)” and that should get you to the data sheet.

Anyway, I changed my fluid to the above well over 12K miles ago. Previous owner had replaced the 5 speed and I had the usual notchy 2nd gear. At the time I changed the fluid, the tranny only had about 1000 miles on it.

Since the oil change I have had no problems shifting. Real test was this fall when cold weather hit. Even in temps as low as the twenties, I have no problems shifting. Shifting is so smooth, I do not even think about it anymore.

As stated before, the key is the Brass synchros used in our manual trannys. Any fluid used must be compatible with them. For what it is worth, I have had no problems since using this product and would recommend it to others. :thumb: :laser:
