Passenger door lock inop/jammed

Hey guys
Ok here s my problem..my passenger door on my 1g is locked and i can t re open it, feels like there s no tension in the inside and outside handles and the power lock wont open it so i was thinking of removing the door panel to find out what s wrong but can I do it with the door shut? If not What else could I do?

wont hurt trying . just get the screws off from the panel and give it a shot. you really cant break anything just be carful to not break any of the power windows and lock wires.

another thing, on the driver side there s a screw that s next to the dash and I dont have access to it when the door s closed, is it the same thing on the passenger side?

I had this problem with the doors on my 2g. The power lock motor seized.

Try unplugging the wiring harness for the power locks and see if that does the trick. Also, while you have the door panel off, make sure that all of the rods are in line and not bent.

Don't think you will be able to get the door panel off without opeing the door. Take off the inside door handle, 1 screw underneath the square cover, I beleive.

I'm trying to remember whats held where, you may be able to undo the screw on the latch handle/lock assembly (under the little black square tab) and pry it enough to look around a bit. Otherwise you'll have to try a coat hanger down into the door to pop it open. You can't take the panel off with the door closed.

On my hyundai tiburon I had to cut the door panel replaced it with a used one.

your not going to be able to get it off, there are screws holding it on all around the panel. i would cut the panel like the last guy said. i dont know who would do that. if your going to have to break something, i would break the outside handle. those are a dime a dozen and cheep on ebay.

Funny how when i was a kid all i wanted was to destroy stuff and now just thinking of cutting a part in my talon makes me

But why breaking handles?
If I can get to just cut it, and fix the mechanism and open it from there I hope I wont have to break any handles...I hope all i ll have to fix is those rods, and maybe the PL motor

I'm telling you just pop it with a coat hanger as if you locked your keys out. You may even have better luck sitting in the car and trying from the inside. Cutting the panel would be pretty dumb imo.

Have you tried removing the inside door handle yet, like I suggested earlier. You won't destroy anything (except maybe that stupid square cover). It's certainly worth trying. Also the pad above the arm rest can be pulled off by hand and replaced without damage.

Ok, So I just went out to see what i could do, pretending the door was stuck shut. Trying to open from the inside without the handle. Is the lock still connected? Can you move the lock back and forth and hear it move within the door? And only the handle isn't working?

If that is the case^ heres what you can try:

The fabric panel above the armrest can be pulled off, the tabs will just pull out and you can reattach it later. Once off there is a hole prob a little bigger then an inch across. Stick your finger in the hole and up, you should feel the two rods. The lower one is the handle the top one is the lock (If need be you could even enlarge the hole some since it's covered by the panel anyways). Using your fingers and a set of needle nose pliers, you can move those rods back and forth. If its just the handle thats not working pull the lower rod towards the front of the car, and it should pop. Let me know, as that will only work if the rods are still in place, and if the lock works.

I ll try to do that tomorrow cause it s already 11pm here...
My first guess is that the lock is not working properly because that PL switch was stuck in the closed position, it s like somethings blocking it s way and it wont go in the open position
I ll see if the rods are still connected tho

no i didnt say just break the handle. i said "why break the interior panel, if you had to chose to break something, i would break the exterior handle. to replace the panel would be alot more money then the exterior handle.
example: cut the panel, pay alot of money to replace
break the exterior handle, pay 10 bucks to fix it.

understand now? then you would have been able to just pull the lever from the inside.
but i would go with the other guyes idea, i just had to make myself clear

Wow Dexta, that's the second time you just repeated what I said

To the OP there is a plastic barrier behind the panel. On most 1gs it is pretty hard and will rip more than stretch. With some small hands/fingers you can reach the the lock mechanism/ exterior handle from inside where the pad hole is. I would try removing the door handle first, the levers are accessable from the door handle. It is possible that the cheap plastic clips that hold the levers in place are broken. When you remove the pad above the armrest the only way to get the thing back on coorectly is to mount it and reach behind to bend down the metal tabs. You'll see what I'm talking about once you do it.

Just took it a bit further. And now you've repeated me. And I don't think the handle will come out too easily, by only removing that one screw.

Ok so i did that little test, the upper rod which is the PL rod, was loose (see pic) so i guess it s that purple thing there that has to be connected to the little rod...Is it broken or can I still connect it? and do I have to connect something on picture 1?

Ok so I finally opened the door !
First I pulled the panel enough to get my hand in there,
Then reconnected that loose PL rod with those purple thing, you have to clip it back on, it s actually a very smart thing, if there too much pressure it ll just pop out and wont brake, so closed it back.
You dont really see it on that 2nd picture but on top of that gold part attached to it theres like a lever that looks a bit like a hook, i pulled on that towards me (after like an hour of ripping my hand and tryin to figre out what s going on in there..) and the door opened .

then I closed it and it was stuck again, so after reopening it, it looks like it s that latch that s on the side of the door that dont come back up when I pull on the handle, I ll try to figure it out tomorrow with more light comparing it to the other door, it s still hard to see anything or do anything in there...
