Is it possible to paint the exhaust manifold? I know there are engine paints, but does anyone know if they will hold? Doers the manifold reach termperatures of more than 500 degrees. ive been detailing my engine lately, and I painted my valve cover a glossy, nice black., I was wondering if I could use engine low gloss black on the header? Thanks

I would think paint on the inside of the manifold would slow down the air a bit and cause a slight power loss. You want that air comming in and getting out as fast as possible.

I think it would help against burn off because both sides are protected.

ya i actully didnt think of that but thats what they do when they coat anything, but i realy do need to find a shop who will coat my exhaust manifold silver and not have it burn off.

I just got a used 2G mani in and it has a little surface rust. I wanted to sand it down and paint the outside. I was wondering if anyone has successfully painted their exhaust mani with a paint that has lasted a year or two.

If you did, please post the brand you used and where you got it. I know most supposed "high temp" paints can't withstand the amonut of heat an exhaust mani sees.

Yeah I'd say go with the jet coating. I cleaned up my 2g mani. before I installed it and used red 1200 degree engine paint with ceramic in it. I applied about 7 coats and even dried it in an oven at 400 between each coat just like the directions said to. I installed my freshly painted mani and after about 5 minutes of driving, I noticed smoke under my hood. I pulled over and tore open my hood to watch most of the color burn right out of my manifold, leaving the white ceramic behind. The only place the paint kept it's color is right by the head. I was pissed at first, but now it actually looks cool. Check my gallery for pics and I have larger versions if you want.

Yeah, it looking nice was a secondary objective. I just wanted to keep it from rusting on the outside. :/

You know what, I think that'd fit my uses for it just fine since I'm really only concerned about the rust. What brand did you use and where'd you get it?

I checked the pics, that looks fine to me!

Well, it does, as long as you don't cheap out on the stuff that matters (ie, t-belt, oil changes, etc.) :thumb:

I can't remember the brand name, but I bought it at Autozone for like 4.99 a can. It was the 1200 degree paint and it said with ceramic right on the can. I think it also came in orange, black, and blue. I'll see if I can run by one and find out what the actual brand was later.

i just used black high temp paint

i think its made by like dupli-color or something?

but if you use it, paint the manifold, then put it on like an hour later and drive around for like an hour

do it before you go cruise or somethin

N/T cars are an entirely different beast. I painted the manifold on my old 1.8 and it stayed with no problems, that's why I used the paint I did on my turbo manifold.

That Air Born company looks like an interesting alternative and they are pretty cheap. I'm just leary b/c the paint I used was supposed to be 1200 degree resistant like their product and look what happened to mine. I'm not going to be upset if I paid 5 bucks and the color burns out, but I'd be mad if I paid 120 or more and the same thing happened. If anybody here actually does Jet Coating, could you drop some info on how it's done and what temps it will withstand and hold color.

LOL I love that picture. I think I'm going to pull my manifold this weekend again so I can finally do a turbo upgrade and maybe I'll try some of that Techline stuff. Maybe with the layer of ceramic that is already on my manifold, I'll get some color to stay behind.

i sandblasted mine then painted it with 1500 degree paint. 2000 miles and 6 months later it still looks perfect.

Where did you get the 1500 degree paint? I sandblasted then bead blasted mine and it still didn't save the color.
