Is it possible to paint the exhaust manifold? I know there are engine paints, but does anyone know if they will hold? Doers the manifold reach termperatures of more than 500 degrees. ive been detailing my engine lately, and I painted my valve cover a glossy, nice black., I was wondering if I could use engine low gloss black on the header? Thanks

ya, but now i need to know what type of paint this is, what color it is and if it helps with the heat. im many concern with the exhaust manifold because i could get the intake pipe and i/c pipe done easily but its the exhaust manifold im worried about

so does anyone know if i could paint the exhaust manifold this, and if it will hold up also what type of paint is this and what color

Nothing I've found in a auto parts store will hold up to the temps your exhaust manifold endures. I bought the highest temp paint I could find (1200 or so) and it had ceramic in it. I followed the instructions for really high temp applications and baked it in my oven for 4 hours at 400F and it lasted all of 5 minutes on the car. The color burned right out and left the white ceramic behind.

If you truly want it done right, send it out to a place that does ceramic coating and they should be able to match any color you give them within reason.

well i would send it out i wouldnt do it my self. do you know what type of paint that is and what type of color it is thanks

the black and silver color on the compressor housing and valve cover there is probably some sort of powdercoating product. the manifold and exhaust housing are both either polished or jet-hot coated. powder coating the exhaust manifold or exhaust housing on the turbo would last about 5 minutes before it burnt back off. the hottest temperature paint i've found so far is for barbecue grills and is a flat black color that will withstand over 1500 degrees, i have it on my exhaust heatshield right now, but not my turbo or manifold.

well i know all of that about the power coating, but what i realy need to know is what color this paint is and what temp it is good up too, if it wil burn right off im going to ceramic coat my manifold black and just do my intake pipe and i/c pipe that color

1.) Don't ask 8 times. Once will do it.

Those are powder coated, and every coater will have their own name for a "chrome like" finish. Powder coating is supposed to withstand turbocharger header temperatures.

Don't spend time and money on powder coating the intake with any intention of making a performance gain. While coating the exhaust _can_ retain some heat for the turbine, on the intake side its use is primarily decorative.

If you really want to paint your exhaust manifold you can use VHT Silver caliper paint it does manage to stay on believe it or not. I have used it on a few honda manifolds we have made and it goes gold when it first gets hot then back to silver and stays that way, pretty cool acctually. DEI also makes a really high temp spray for items like exhaust manifolds etc check out this link from summit racing http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=DEI-010302 -DEI
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=VHT-SP735 - VHT

Tho the VHT only says 900deg we use it and it works like a charm. I have only used the DEI once but the silver looks nice.

It doesn't nothing to trap in heat however. A real ceramic coating job will look like that and help to hold some heat in.

Just for the record as soon as it gets hot it doenst look shiny like that anymore it goes more of a mat-grey and is not shiny.

Here is my manifold before firing my car after the new turbosetup. Its ceramic coated.

Here is my manifold after driving for a few months. Apparently you can polish it up again but why bother.

Why don't you just send out your manifold to get ceramic coated and paint the intake pipe and i/c pipes yourself and send the company the color code off the paint you use. Pick a color and run with it.

High temp paints from the store will work on just about anything on the car except the manifold, turbo exhaust housing, O2 housing and the first 6 inches of our downpipes. Like me, you'll end up with the color burning off. I guess turbo car exhaust systems just get too hot for anything less than professional painting with ceramic paint.

N/T cars are way different, I painted the headers and downpipe on my Civic with the same paint I used on my DSM and it worked fine and held it's color to this day.

i never said i was doing it my self, im sending my exhaust manifold out for sure to someone to get dont, i think im going to skip the exhaust manifold with that color and just do it black, but my i/c and intake pipe im going to do that color. makes things easier and i know the black is ment for the exhaust manifold

ahem.. You OBIVOULSY didn't read my post.

You can paint your exhaust manifold on a turbo car with the right paint. I use VHT Caliper paint in silver on turbo manifolds and downpipes on cars all the time and the color stays. I gave two examples of types of paint that will work, try them out.

Been there, done that, do it for a living. :thumb:

Just for example here is my downpipe and dump tube from my wastegate painted with VHT silver caliper paint almost 6000miles ago. It never changed color or looked any different from the day I painted it. My maifold and turbo housing are ceramic coated however. Even the backing plate that bolts onto the turbo for the downpipe is paint and it's stayed a perfect color of silver.

I did read your post and I did try VHT at one point and it still burned off. Maybe I did something wrong in the prep but I can think of what it would have been. I sand-blasted, then bead blasted, the whole thing except for where the gaskets would go and then I sprayed it down with some water and dried it with a towel and then stuck it near a heater to make sure it was good and dry.

I used the paint within the temp conditions on the can and the humidity was low that day. Give me some pointers for the next time so I can actually get some color under my hood.

was up guys im looking for a shop that could paint my exhaust manifold, o2 housing and dump tube in a silver color that will stay on and not burn off. i talked to jethot and there silver is only good for 1300. anyone know a shop that could do silver that will withstand 1600, thanks jim

Jet Hot coating is as good as it comes, based on what I have read from several people on this forum. Why do you need it to withstand 1600f anyway? Are you coating the inside of these parts? No?

well i would rather be safe then sorry, do you think that the silver 1300 will be good for my car tring to run mid 11's. thanks jim

LOL ya, well it says the polish look is good for 1300 and the silver is good for 1500 so i think ill go with jethot. thanks

well i just check today and it 3rd gear at about full throttle im getting to 1450 so i think i need something that will hold up to 1600, jet hot coates the out and inside of the manifold does this help more. thanks
