Is it possible to paint the exhaust manifold? I know there are engine paints, but does anyone know if they will hold? Doers the manifold reach termperatures of more than 500 degrees. ive been detailing my engine lately, and I painted my valve cover a glossy, nice black., I was wondering if I could use engine low gloss black on the header? Thanks

has anyone ever painted their heat shield? if so obviously i need high engine temp paint but how should i go about doing that? just sand, primer, paint, and clear coat?:dsm:

For 20 bucks you can do it yourself. It will last. It withstands 2000 degrees. I used it on a tubular header.

Have you used it on a manifold in a turboed car? Also how hard is it to apply this stuff? Will it give me more brain damage than I already have? Whats the scoop?

I painted the heatsheild over the manifold with the 1200 degree paint with ceramic on the bottle... Dont' use it. It faded within a few days. On the manifold it will last alot shorter before its all gone. Get it dont prefessionally so you dont have to worry about it.

Too late! Been there done that. Had 1200 degree paint burn off of heat shield instantly so I wouldnt dare put it on the mani. That 1200 degree paint started freakin melting before the car even warmed up good.

I just bought an 2g manifold to swap out w/ my stock turbo 1g manifold.

I wanna know what paint i can use to paint it. Do I use the high heat paint or what kinda paint is there to use.

I would like to paint it a different color other than that rusty color.

Is this possible or no ?

Or will it fade off and just smoke..... ?

It will probably just chip, smoke, or burn.

Really, you shouldn't see it anyway because you SHOULD be running with a heatshield on it.

If you want to help keep the heat in the manny though and out of the engine further, look into ceramic coating or jethot coating.

If you need a heatshield, and need something that looks good, jm fabrications has a polished ss shield. It's like 50 bucks. I run one, it looks awesome, and does a very good job with heat.

Yeah, rattle can will not hold up to the heat...very rarely will it even hold up on a valve cover and that is no where near as hot as the exhaust mani

Paint cant hold up. Temps hit like 1200-1400. High heat engine paint only goes up to like 550-750 or something. The coatings usually dont last either. Get a heat shield as suggested or fab your own like I did. But I have a shop and waterjet at my disposal. SS heat shield is the best route.

Rattlecan engine enamel/powdercoating will both chip/flake etc under the temps... Ceramic coating I think will hold up. I Plan on just wrapping mine and then putting a heat shield over it to keep things under control. That way I can just shine the shield once and awhile :rocks:

Which is why i suggested jethot, they're specifically header coatings. But really, a good SS heat shield like the JM is enough.

If he's missing that though. . .

Do you have the lower heat shield too? Or is that gone as well? Because i'd MAKE SURE you get something down there, or you can kiss alt's goodbye real fast.

I have used the 1200 degree silver paint on my manifold for almost 8 months now with no chipping or any other problems. the trick is to put on EXTREMELEY light coats. I ended up with about 6 coats of really light layers. It looks as good as the day I sprayed.
Another helpfull hint is to go out and get it really hot right after it dries.
I used the same paint on my transmission and it still looks new.
I'd be happy to help you out if you are not confortable doing it.

VHT Flameproof didn't do it for me. I painted mine black and it's faded considerably and chipping off.

EDIT: This was after sandblasting the manifold also and getting all of the rust off, then using compressed air to clear it of and sand.
