painted my heat shield today will it hold up?

It should hold up but if anything it will just flake off. You might smell it burning too, and why would you paint your heat sheild?

Mine just turned into white powder and wore off, but mine was on the manifold.
You'll probably get a little smoke and an awfull smell.

It will smell terrible and I hope you plan on coating it again in 6 months.

well wouldnt the smell go away eventually? is it got bubble up u think or just fade?

i painted my shield a couple years ago when i first stated turbo dsm's. i used hi temp engine enamel. had a pic on the can of some painted headers and calipers. the red paint just turned blackish after just a couple days of street driving

Im really surprised nobody has suggested using BBQ paint on these, it actually holds up pretty good.

I completely agree, i used BBQ paint on my heat shield about a year ago, with almost no prep. It still looks as good today as the day i did it. Plus its cheap :thumb:

@nek & JaxonsGSX,

I'd like to do the same and paint my heat shield a semi-gloss black to match my valve cover. Just to dress-up the engine bay a little bit. My 4G63 is non-turbo, so I have a larger heat shield. Do you guys recommend any specific brands of BBQ paint? I've never used it before and I have little experience with painting auto parts, aside from a quick-n-dirty spray paint job on my wheels.

Rustolium BBQ paint, it's rated for 2,000 degrees. You can get it from Home Depot. I painted my heatshield about 6 months ago and it has held up fine.

Hope this helps!

So I finally got off my a$$ and painted my heat-shield. Looks good so far! I used a semi-gloss BBQ paint. Whaddaya think? I like it and I think it dresses up the engine bay pretty well. :D

It looks like it has waves on the two ends.

Yeah, I think I probably got a little too trigger-happy with the spray paint.
I really slathered it on thick because I was worried about it "cooking" and flaking off. It hasn't, so far, but it's only been about a day or so.

Now that you mention it, it does look like a garbage bag is stretched over it. I swear I didn't go that route, though... :sneaky:
