I was driving last night and about 2 miles from home I noticed I had no heat, it was blowing cold. I checked my coolant temp (had my laptop in the car) and it said 210.

I pulled to a stoplight and instantly noticed steam coming from the hood. So I thought “coolant leak, no big deal, I’m only 2 miles from home. Drove home, pulled into the garage, but by that time I was pretty much out of water completely.

Coolant temp never went over 210, but then I realized my mistake (there wansn’t any coolant left, so the reading probably wasn’t accurate). Shit.

Found the leak (hose from thermostat to turbo cracked) and fixed it and filled the water back up, which was instantly steaming and boiling, even with the car off.

I let the car cool and it started back up, seems to be running fine, but I don’t know how hot it actually got. What do I need to do? Compression test? Leakdown test? Am I ok with a Harbor Freight compression tester?

Thanks

Funny this happened to you about the same time something similar happened to me. Driving down 285 this weekend, my thermostat of less then 2,000 miles got stuck open. Something in the Colorado air?

Does it start and run all right? If it idles and boosts as it used to, I'm sure you're fine.

Couldn't hurt to do the tests. They're quick and easy. A compression test will show how much compression each cylinder is making. You want to be within the FSM specs and have consistency across all four cylinders.
A leak down test will indicate how well the motor maintains compression and where it's leaking.

I've never used the Harbor Freight compression tester, but I have used their fuel pressure tester and it works fine.

I was on 285 and Kipling >.< LOL Yeah it seems to be running fine, I was a bit freaked out though. I'll do a compression test and post the results just to be sure (although I didn't do a compression test BEFORE this, so I don't really have anything to compare to)

Here's the culprit:
