Im asking this question for a friend that owns a 95 Talon TSI. The overdrive always worked pefect until last week. Then while on the highway it started jumping out of overdrive and popping back in place. Now it is getting worse and the engine just revs when the tranny shifts into over drive. It no longer engauges. So you have to keep the shifter a gear down to drive the car. We thought it may be a shift solenoid but now im thinking the tranny might be junk. The car is bone stock.
any info much appreciated...

First of all I would drive to flush it out PUT new fluid in it. You could also try some BG products they have good quality flush kits. Check your linkage. If it comes to worse take to a shop and check it out there.

This couldnt be farther from the truth. You DONT flush a automatic tranny thats acting weird, this could lead to even worse things. First, I would check the obvious, make sure your overdrive button is connected correctly in you shifter. Ive had them disconnect and not work. After that make sure the O/D wires are completley connected to where it needs to be. Also, check your fluid, if its brown you could have burnt clutches and this can cause the O/D to not work properly.

Sounds like nothing more than the end clutches have failed....quite common ya know.

You can actually replace them with a new updated kit that will prevent future failures. A fresh filter and some new fluid would be a good choice at the same time.

I'm not saying that it can't be anything else, just it is almost 90% an end clutch failure that gives these symptoms.
