Does having overdrive activated really benefit you?

I know my friend takes it off when he races, but i dunno if thats beneficial or not.

Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks,

Ben :talon:

All it does is place the engine at a lower RPM to save gas when cruising on the highway.

Overdrive is when the engine spins slower than the wheels...taking it off will only keep it from shifting into 5th gear keeping his car at high RPMS...just as 1 and 2 on there keeps it in that gear...but to get more speed from the car once he hits 7 grand on the tach he needs to engage OD to shift to 5th...hope that helps

Basicly its a gear but unlike the others spins slower than the wheels. :)

O/D allows u to get better gas mileage when going highway speeds. It drops the rpm so ur engine doesnt use as much gas. It also means u dont have as much power...but if u were to drop it out of O/D the rpms go back up and u have torque and hp for ur disposal. I dont understand why people dont get the concept of O/D. O/D is the equivalent of manual transmission's 5th gear. its basically a highway gear. When u race in a M/T ur most important gears are 1-4. Now 5th gear is not very important. So in terms relative to A/T. O/D is just a highway gear basically. We want our D for racing and O/D for highway. Sorry i know this can get confusing but i its like 2 a.m and im kinda tired so. This may make no sense at all.

it dosnet matter, our transmissions are smart, if you florr it off the line, after building boost, you will be in the lowest posible ratio, overdrive only has to do with cruising. if you manage to make it through the first three gears and the over drive is off, then the trany wont shift. just leaving it on all the time, unless you are doing fast driving where you are crusign

i agree.. flooring it at OD/off will still give you more torque (higher RPM) than when you have OD/on.

im sure transdude can coroborate this, but when you floor it, from a cruise, it will downshift regardless... im a fan of turing the over drive off durring spirited driving, but from a stand still it makes no differnce, when the pedel is too the floor.

i c what you're saying.. but i think what we were trying to say is that when you floor it with OD/off.. it'll still downshift but since the ratio is higher than OD/on. the result of downshift will still yield a even higher RPM than if you were to floor it with OD/on. don't know if that makes sense.

you are right, it will probly down shift once versus twice with the overdrive on, but this is only from a cruise. I have seen the car downshift twice when floored while crusiing, under full throttle condidtions the car has acces to 3 gears in od off and 4 in od on
