Alright awhile back I pulled my transmission apart since it was making a horrible popping noise while turning. I had recently installed a welded center diff, (3months prior). All was good upto that point.

While trying to pull the transfercase off so I could get the tranny off I noticed the output shaft was sliding out with the transfercase, didnt think nothing of it since I had already removed the center diff.

Now that I got the transmission all back together, I am now realizing that the output shaft will slide all the way in where its suppost to but it will slide out just as easily.
Am I missing something? Cause there was nothing wrong before when I changed the differential, I dont recall any clips or anything that held the shaft into place. Possible cause of the popping noise?

Help  I'm tired of this tranny.

The transmission output shaft is retained by a small ball bearing that fits into the end of the output shaft. Look at the end and you will notice a groove cut in it all the way around. This is where the ball bearing goes. This ball bearing is retained by the viscous coupler so if you removed this when you welded your center diff you are most likely sunk. You can either have your VC cut down in a lathe so that it is just that outer spline section and put that on to retain the output shaft or there is a piece of pipe you can use to slip on there and retain the ball bearing. You also need to use the stock snap ring on the end of the VC to retain either the chunk of the VC you kept or the piece of pipe you found.

Hey, thanks.

The morons who rebuilt this tranny before I got it left them out.
Do you think this could have caused the popping noise? I just put a new 95 stocker center diff and viscous in along with a 92 (23spline) front diff. Trying to replace anything that might of made the popping noise :)
