I'm thinking about opening my old transmission and attempting to swap out the bearings myself.

It's a 97 GST MT tranny. I think it's the bearings due to a hum that it made, most prominently at highway speeds in 5th.

Anyways, to the point. I'm wondering what I will have to look out for when I disassemble it and if replacing the bearings is going to be a pain in the ass. I have never opened a transmission but I am mechanically inclined. I was a mechanic in the military for 9 years and have been tinkering with cars for ever longer.

Thanks!

The input shaft bearings never go bad, it's the intermediate shaft end bearings which get chewed up and can trash a trans. If you have the correct pullers, press and tools, it's not too bad to replace them. I would recommend replacing the following parts below while you are in there:

1 Drain Plug Washer, Gasket, Seal – Jacks Transmissions LLC
1 Fill Plug Washer, Gasket, Seal – Jacks Transmissions LLC

Need 2 of these:
Dowel Pin – Jacks Transmissions LLC

Need 3 of these:
DSM Fork Roll Pin – Jacks Transmissions LLC

Need 2 of these:
End Nut – Jacks Transmissions LLC

Need 3 of these:
Genuine OEM Mitsubishi Trans Fluid – Jacks Transmissions LLC

End Bearing BOTTOM – Jacks Transmissions LLC
End Bearing TOP – Jacks Transmissions LLC

Need 2 of these:
DSM CV Seal Output - FWD – Jacks Transmissions LLC

A quick Google search on how to disassemble a GS-T trans can be easily found. That could give you more of an idea of what you are getting in to.

Good luck!!

Jack
