Had my tranny rebuilt last summer because of grinding gears. Worked well for about 1000 mi and then started getting a bearing noise and later was snapping on decel.

Pulled the trans and found teeth missing from my gears that were in contact with my output shaft. This was caused by the bearing coming completely apart, the cage was chewed up and some of the bearings were just scattered through the trans.

I figured that the preload wasn't set right on the output shaft bearings. I rebuilt the trans myself and made sure that I used the correct shims(used the solder method). Tranny worked great, for about another 1000-1500 miles and then started getting a bearing noise again on decel, WTF?

So I pulled the trans again and put in a used one, which turned out to be total junk. Anyway, my dad called me and said he took apart the trans and the same thing happened again. Output shaft bearing failed and as a result, I am missing chunks from my gearset and my ring gear.

So what is the deal, has this happened to anybody? I don't understand what would cause this, if the preload wasn't set right I wouldn't think the bearing would just grenade, more likely wear out faster and cause some growling later. 1000 miles isn't exactly premature failure in my book, it's more like doomed from the start. Haven't been home to see it yet, but anychance the case is messed up and causing these failures?

hmmmmm, Rebuid the trans ur self eh???? did you use a press? Also, The CASEING could be bad, im not sure. I know someone that Rebuild his rear end( in a van) and it kept blowing out, something about the bearings not siting right. me and him concluded that his rearend got to hot and Screwed up the housing. So its possible.

Did you reinstall the retaining ball that holds the output shaft? Did you take apart and inspect the center differential? Most issues with that shaft are center diff related and even center diffs on stock cars go bad prematurely. I went through two of those output shafts before I realized the center diff was the problem. $$$

It's a tough one to diagnose via email with out seeing it.

There is no retaining ball holding the input shaft, it is sadwiched between the two halves of the case and held by tapered roller bearings. Don't have a center diff either, I am fwd.

Sorry for going a little bit offtopic, but I get a howling noise on deceleration. My third and second have been grinding ever since I got my car.

What does this mean, and what damage will it cause, if I let it happen for too long? I really do not have the money for a rebuild right now.

Thanks, and sorry once again for going off topic.
