output shaft play before engagement

I was replacing my clutch the other day and when I took the Tcase off the output shaft came along with it, but I know that little ball that holds it in the tranny came off so thats not my problem. My problem is i can turn the output shaft probably eighth of a turn before it engages in the tranny. what could it be? any ideas?

Is there any wear on the splines, like this...
