When I tried to remove my transfer case Wednesday the shaft was sliding out of the transmission and was stuck in the transfer case. After trying for about a half hour then waking up after I fell asleep under the car I gave up. Now I finally got it out but what causes that shaft to slide in and out? And I tried pulling it out of the transmission but couldn't budge it now that the X- case is off.

It's fine. Just stick it back in.

No it's not fine. There is a small metal bearing that holds the output shaft in the center diff. It is held in place with the VC. If you pulled the shaft out that ball is now inside the tranny somewhere, usually taking off the end cover and the sandwich plate it will roll out. That ball needs to be reinstalled, play on that shaft even with the transfer case bolted up can cause wear on the center diff.

He is right about this.

Have you or anyone else ever removed the vc from the tranny before? If so, the retaining ball could have fallen out and someone that didnt know about it would have ever noticed.

I said that because i remember we did my trans and the guy who did it said not to worry about the shaft cominG out next time i pullled the transfer case. But i just thought about and it was because he had messed with something which would cause this and didnt feel like removing the transfer case just to hit the shaft. :)

Don't let that guy work on your car anymore.

Agreed. That's the 90% DSM rule in effect. Everyone complains about the cars being unreliable and 90% of the time it's the monkey holding the wrench who messed up.
