So while working on my engine yesterday I noticed an opening in the firewall on the passenger side. Its right behind the battery if I remember. It looks like it is a opening leading the the heater core or something. (I'm not saying that's what I think it is). What is this for? Obviously it's not necessary, just curious.

There are 2 openings there, 1 is the grommet for the engine harness and the other is for the AC inlet/outlet to and from the cabin components. The heater core would be to the left of the intake manifold a bit towards the passenger side.

I've been organizing my engine bay. I think the opening that you speak of, is for the AC. Thats if its oval with two holes and two little pipes on it. If its just a single hole, then its for the winshield washer hose.

Pics would definitely help. But like everyone else said. It's most like ac or heater core related.
I had a large opening on the passenger side when I removed my ac system. It's gone now. :) I'll post pics up some day but that'll be when I redo my engine bay.

the only place that has a decent size hole is where the harness goes through, unless the dash was pulled and the ac box was removed the aluminum bracket where the lines conect would still be filling the hole and the heater core has 2 small holes that are hard to see unless the intake manifold is off.

Here's the picture of it. It sounds to me that it is for the A/C. Looking at the engine, I now see that my A/C compressor is gone. That's just great. Looks like I'm going to be installing a new A/C sometime in the next 8 months. :ohdamn: I don't think that extra 5 horsepower is worth it unless the car is a dedicated racer.

5 hps isnt much, but its the low idle and 1st gear that will make drivability a problem, but to each their own.

I also wanted to know what is on the other side of that grommet for the A/C. I have a 1g and have located where it is, and did want to start removing if it connected to the dash or my heater core or anything else. Thanks, dont mean to highjack.

There are a couple reasons for loosing the AC, the PO either wanted to remove some weight, clean up the engine bay, it was leaking and didn't want to bother fixing it, or it just didn't work.

The only pull you'll have is when the AC compressor engages, when it's not on, there is not pull on the engine.

The stuff that is under the dash would include the evaporator and the expansion valve.

It definitely cleans the engine bay up, it lets more air flow under the hood and through the radiator also. It just depends what your doing with the car whether or not you should keep it. As far as that aluminum manifold coming through the fire wall, leave it because to remove it you have to take the dash out and then you lose the heat too since the fan, cooling and heating boxes all connect together.

Here is a better picture.

hope that helps?
