Hey guys, i was thinking about running a open sock downpipe.. would it benefit me? would it give me more hp gain than my full thermal r&d cat back exhaust? Let me know what you guys think about this

First of all the best exhaust for a turbo car is no exhaust. Unlike N/A applications, we don't wan't backpressure to make the most HP out of our engines, the turbine wheel and housing of the turbo give more than enough. That's the reason why you see a lot of the faster DSMs running a side exit exhaust out their front bumper. Would it give you more power than hooking up your 3 inch cat-back? Probably. Would it be loud as f***? Yep. I would even go as far as to say that it would be impossible to drive your car and still actually enjoy it, as you would be running an exhaust with no muffler, resonater, etc that would be about 36 inches long and end right under your feet, a recipe for deafness if ever I heard one. To give it some perspective, my local track won't even let you race on street night without some sort of muffler on the exhaust, so if that setup is too loud for street night on the track, I can only imagine what kind of grief you'll get on the road, be it from the 5-0 or just from going deaf.

Lol well, yeah i know it is going to be crazy loud but, we ran an open dp on my friends mazda speed 3 and he has an after market turbo xs dp and it was really loud when he got on it but jus cruising it was loud but not to to loud but still was loud. But idk i will most likely try it and if it seems to get to much attention then ill will prob bolt it back up. thanks man.

i ran open 3 inch down pipe for 6 months and loved it

its hard to keep quiet going up a hill though

Put the rest of my tbe exhaust on and felt a ton of lost power

stock open down pipe will benefit greatly if you dont mind the check light and a fix it ticket

yeahh, well my CEL light is on as it is for idol control malfunction but it seems as if my car idols fine, idk its weired. i just might try and delete that code just the fact that its useless to me i feel. but yeah i dont mind the loud exhaust i live in like a quiet ass town but idc what people say LOL:D i just love the sound of it

Be cautious of boost creep! I ran an open 3inch downpipe for a few days while I was making changes too my exhaust, and boost creep was in issue for me. I would generally be rock steady on 15psi, but with the open downpipe, I would at times spike to 18psi or so!

well im running off of stock boost though, i haven't upped the boost at all would i still be prone to that if that even happens with a open dp?

dude you dont have to worry at all at stock boost level even if it does creep. Im running 19psi on my stock rewired 91 with no issues....those teeny stock snails cant flow enough to really do much harm anywhere below 20lbs. Granted heat soak becomes a problem being out of its efficiency range but as long as your not beating the absolute shit out of it back to back or raod racing... not that big of an issue. But anyway. unbolt it and go. you dont need the internet to make the decision for you. try it :thumb:

haha i just wanted to see peoples input on it, im planning on doing it regardless of what people say LOL i just wanted to see some opnions thanks tho

I was trying to think up a cool system to beable to run 3in turbo back like I have. But then do a o2 dump and downpipe dump out the front bumper. Just have a bolt on plate that would cover the open dump, but when you drive to the track it quite, when you get there switch over to the open dump. BUt im not sure about room, and not enough time.

They have something like that on the new skylines.

You're pretty much talking about an exhaust cut-out. They've been around for years, although usually people just use them in a way that it's effectively switching from a regular exhaust to an open DP, I've never heard of one being run through the front bumper. I gotta admit, its a lot of work for no gain over having the cutout just disconnect under the car, but it would look cool

yea, it would look very mean, and thats why i think it would be cool, i knew would have to use a cut out but bends and other thing would be pretty tight. But im still might try it.
