I bought an used exhaust from boostin 1g and he has never sent it!!! Does anybody know him? I know his name is Nate. And since he hasnt sent my exhaust and its been close to 5 months now, I am thinking about unbolting the exhaust after the downpipe. I live in Kansas, and from what I know so far, they are not strict on that stuff. I have never had emissions or inspections done on my car. I have read a little about this, but I was wondering if anyone had any sound clips of what it sounds like and what the power gains are and where in the band are they? Does this create boost creap?

I am thinking of doing the same thing because I dont have a downpipe so I was wondering what Would happen if I just drove around for about two weeks untill I got some money put together...would it hurt my motor..... and cops arent bad around here they dont care

first, it would annoy everyone around you, and then you too would be embarrassed to drive around like that because it sounds like total shit...i drove my car like that once when i was getting ready to put my 3" on and i sunk myself down in the seat just to get it across town..the gains are noticeable though...but i wouldnt recommend it

Turbo engines dont like back pressure so an ope down pipe will give you an increase in performance. Where a NT engine needs a certain amount of back pressure to get it's max performance. As for the sound it is loud, I personally like it but I dont know if I would want it all the time.

I had a jeep wrangler for a while and it was a soft top with the back window out, so i'm used to alot of noise, so I dont think that will bother me. Is it even loud if you dont rev high?

Sounds like crap!

I too drove with open dowpipe across town to muffler shop.... It quiets down around 3k rpm so that was my sweet spot when driving..

Ummm...no engine NEEDS back pressure LOL. Would you mind explaining the physics behind this? Back pressure is what slows the piston down on the exhaust stroke. Less back pressure = MORE POWER (regardless if force induction is involved). Whoever told you this needs to be bi*** slapped. If you do not believe me (in which case I highly recommend you re-take high school physics) please refer to this thread:

yea, thats not true, turbos dont like back pressure, and neither do nt's, but what is true with BOTH OF THEM, is that:

if your exaust is too big, the egt will drop from the exaust gas staying in the piping for so long that you will be creating back pressure with the extremely denser air that is in the end of the exaust... and your carrying around extra weight,... so you have to find the right size exaust with any car, and shorting it up will just make that job 10000x easier...the exaust gas will stay in the pipe for about a 1/3 the time without a cat back system.... aka 1/3 the time for egts to drop and eg density to rise...BIGGER AINT ALWAYS BETTER, BUT BACKPRESSURE NEVER IS

My bad. I was just going by what someone who I thought knew what they are talking about. So next time I see them I will give them a good bi*** slap.

I drove with only an o2 housing on the car for about a week :boring: It was pretty weird hearing the turbo ''unspool'' like a tractortrailor... even at idle my turbo sounded like it was spooling.. Oh well, It was definatly DEFINATLY loud when I got on the throttle... :|

I guarantee it's louder than your jeep was.

does anybody know where there are any soundclips of open exhaust on our cars? i would love to hear it. I know alot of people do it at the track.

I run open occasionally at the track, here is a link to a video of me running my first 12, Yes the sound quality is kinda of poopy and the camera man shakes a bit, but you can hear what it sounds like, bear in mind, camera man is 150 yards down track about about at the top row (40 stairs) I also work security there so I walk those steps enought to know how many there are. It sounds pretty different in person and at idle or first accel when starting off. I would drive rom my house to the track open 1 a week, (about 2 miles) people really look weird at that noise. just unbolt your downpipe at the cat and start it up for a bit, its only 2 or 3 bolts depending on your configuration.

what smoke? The burn out? Yes Im FWD. I hope thats what your talking about? I dont see any other smoke than that. Anyone else?

oh....hah.....it sounded like you started your car right there, and all that smoke came out! ROFL

note the long pause before he finished going down the track, and the green light that appeared right before he started hauling ass...

nice run, you almost beat the carolla (or at least thats what the anouncer called it i believe)

Its a tempo, and I actually did beat him, I said 13.0 and ran a 12.991 @109 (.009 seconds to fast, BREAKOUT), he said 19.96 and ran a 20.011 (0.051 seconds slower than his guess) . Believe it or not, this is actually the other guys other car. http://www.nhrasportcompact.com/2004/dyno/results.html 2nd row down pic on the right (orange RX7). He took first in points in the local class for some 3 years I think, and is currently 1st on both fast compact in his other RX7, and in sport compact in the 94 tempo, has to be wierd for him to go from a 20 second car to a 10 second car. Last season he was my favorite guy to race, even though he took me down everytime.

no i mean, he started like 10 seconds before you, and you almost beat him, i know your time was faster....

its bracket racing, regardless of the time you end up running, the slow car gets a head start by the time difference of the of the faster car. so he got a 6.96 second head start, but I finished .060 seconds before him, that why I lost. I ran .009 seconds faster than I said I was going to, Ideally you should finish at the same time you said, but going to fast disqualifies you automatically unless its a double breakout or the other guy red lights. He ran just slow than his mark. Thats why I like bracket racing, I could never beat a properly support 60 trim down the track but unless the guy knows his car very well. I figure I can hold my own against it in bracket racing. Last season unless I was going for a best time and didnt care or was just trying to tune in DSMlink, the largest time diff I was off was 0.053 seconds.

also mckc here is another clip from that same night, its a little harder to hear since the other car has the typical honda "bumble bee stuck in a pop can" sound. Ran a 13.210 off of my 13.200 guess. Pretty sure I would have broke out if I didnt hit the rev limiter on the 2-3 shift

Also MCKC have you unbolted your exhaust to get a idea of what it sound like? My father still can not get over how fast "4 bangers" are getting, he was impressed how much louder the turbo got once the test pipe was dropped. I think if he had the time he would build one himself. Its always better when a sport brings the father-son relationship closer.

Hey, no I havent had the chance to unbolt it yet. My car is getting new seals put in the balance shafts right now. I'll let you know how it goes when I get it back this week. Thanks for the clip. Thats really cool about you and your dad getting closer. My dad died when I was 4, so i've never had that oppurtunity. But now I have God as my dad, so its all good. I bet my dad can beat up your dad. :D

Dam dude sorry to hear, I feel like utter ass now. But after you Balance shafts are done try it out, and let us know what you think.

i agree with the others, yes the power is good and turbo spools faster but the noise....shit....

lets say just dont get stuck at a long light...LOL
on the free way its cool, because a lot of its dround out but if u do city driving, hell NO!

u'll be sitting at a light and the people will be looking over at u like WTF, but on a good note... they can look all they want to and think ur cars screwed up, until the light changes and they're seeing this loud ass car leave the hell out of them...LOL
i was thinking about doing this but to me its not worth it.....cant hear the BOV..LOL
