Brand new long block.I timed it out side of the car and spun it by hand, fine.Put it in the car try to start it.When I tried start it, it made a "rrr....rrrr....rrr...rrrr" noise like it was tryin to start but couldnt. So I figured it was the starter since it was old.Grabbed a new one of those and decided to check the timing.I took out the spark plugs and tried to line up tdc.I got one revolution on the crank down and on its second trip, I got resistence. It wont budge. Is it possible the timing maybe went off after the tensioner sat and I bent valves?I really hope not.I cant do a compression test with it like this so Im about to yank the head.

Do your timing marks still match up? Take off your valve cover and see if anything looks amiss before you take your engine apart again. You could simply have something binding that may have inadvertently got left in during the build.

Will it turn over the other direction? Maybe line up the marks that way?..

Rotating it counter clockwise is a negative. You are asking to throw off your timing then.

Pull the valve cover, and inspect for damage. If nothing there, you are going to have to pull the head to figure out what's going on without further risking damage.

You should be able to take a look and see that the dowel pins on the cam gears will still be pointing the same exact direction as each other and if you could imagine where they would be at while at TDC try to imagine where your crank sprocket would be at as well. You can leave the lower cover on and use the notch in the crank pulley to decide if it's in time with your cam gears since they're all the same size in diameter. With how bad it sounds you should be able to tell pretty quickly if your timing is off.

Well as it sits, the dowel pins are up, lined up marks on the gears, and the crank is lined up.The oil sproket is still off (i know it takes a few revolutions to get that to line up), but i didnt think that mattered for my purposes given the fact the bs are removed. What Im gonna try is taking the cams out and spinning the the crank to see if there is any resistence...than retiming...I dunno though, Im nervous.

I've done this before....I bet you got the car in gear. :thumb:

Put the car in Neutral then drop a long screwdriver down in the #1 cylinder.
Now rotate the crank clockwise till the screwdriver is at the TOP of its travel (TDC)
Now check the cam gear timing marks. They should be level with the head surface.

You have got to be f*cking kidding me....But why would it not start than? And why did it make the starnge noises when it was cranking?
That would be sweet if that was the case.

How long did you crank the engine? It will take a minute to start up the first time. Did you prime the engine first before you put the timing belt on?
Did you prime the fuel on start up? If NOT then it will take a little longer to fire up. Im not sure what the RRR RRRR RRR sound is haha. That sounds like a pirate stuck in your engine bay to me haha

Hahaha..no pirates.Yeah I primed it...This is actually my brothers 2gb talon the enigne is in fyi.But I guess it just didnt sound normal when it was turning over. Let me try to describe the sound agin...
A normal start up..."rrr.rrr.rrr.rrr"
This start up.."rrr....rrrr....rrrr.....rrrr"

It sounded slower and like the starter was dying, which is why I bought a starter.Everything is new..everything>Clutch,fkywheel, longblock...u name it.
Like I said, Im gonna try to take the cams off and retime..The covers and t belt are off so pulling the head isnt that big of deal, minus wasting a new head gasket and time.

Does this car have the 6 bolt.. judging by the spacing in your rrr's LOL it sounds like you might have the CAS dialed in 180* out. If its a 7bolt and the timing is lined up it should fire. If you havent gotten it to turn over yet make sure a cam follower didnt fall off a lifter and lodge against the cam. This can fubar stuff really quick like :thumb:

I know what your trying to describe. Ive hear alot of old SBC's be 180* out and they sound like they are going to start but wont ever hit.

Check your spark plug wires.. If the firing ordering is wrong the car wont start ofcourse and it will make weird noises because the plugs are firing at the wrong time forcing the pistons down when they should be coming up.

If your still suspicious about your valves smacking the piston, did you bleed your lifters if/when you removed your cams?

The engine was bought by my brother from overbore..completely timed and ready to drop in.I had to take off the belt to put on a 1g motor mount, but other than that it was ready to go.At any rate, I didnt bend any valves...at this point I think it was a combination of the starter (165k and pretty beat looking) and the cas. Oh and the battery is brand new and the firing order is correct..its a 2gb so it stays the same.Hopefully it will be running for the first time tommorow so I can go back to working on my pos.:thumb:

So the CAS was 180 out and the starter was dragging... hmmm

Glad you listened to at least two of us ;)

So did you figure out why you couldn't turn the engine over by hand before? Was it in Gear? Did you re-check your Timing? Its always good to give it one more check when the engine is in the car.

setting and make sure it has 12volts...
You will always get 12vdc, but the cranking amp output is terribly low - why of the overnight charge.

Voltage is like a 5/8" dia garden hose. Amperage is how much water pressure is coming out of that garden hose.

Plus, chargers only put out 12v anyway, thus you'll never overcharge the battery.

Yeah it wasnt turning over cause my brother put it in gear:banghead: The belt was already off before I knew this so yes I redid the timing.

Haha yeah its okay...I've been there before. I just did that when I put my new engine in 2 weeks ago. I went to re-check the timing once the engine was in the car. So I put my 1/2" rachet on the crank and it turned about 1/4 turn then it stopped. I got all scared thinking my valves were making contact with the Pistons. Luckily I noticed the car trying to ROLL when I was cranking the rachet. This made me realize it was in gear still haha. :ohdamn:
