ok to start car with transfer case removed?

Just removed the transfer case from my buddies car to help locate a leak, we dont seem to see a leak on the T-case itself so I got under and noticed the front driver side axle seal was a little moist, so now we're thinking it is that seal that is leaking and eventually dripping down on the Tcase making it appear as if it is the Tcase that has a leak. And now that the car is parked with all 4 tires in the air there is no leak, so we we're wondering if it was OK to start up the car and put it in gear WITHOUT the T-case installed so we can watch if it leaks out of the front driver side axle seal.

We started it up in gear let the wheels spin in the air, no leaks coming out of the front driver side axle shaft seal or anywhere else at all, so we focused on the Tcase itself, I pulled the rubber plug on top of the Tcase and flipped the ball shape over (or inside out if you will) and found a tiny hole, im thinking this hole may be normal in order for the Tcase to vent, but the shape of the cut is triangular and not so perfect which makes me think its torn. Here is a pic... im squeezing on the rubber a bit to help expose the hole more. Can someone verify if this hole is supposed to be there or not? - thanks!!

While we are on the tcase subject, I just dropped mine last sat, and the shaft that connects the tranny to the tcase has about 1/2 -1 tooth of side to side rotational play. And about 1/8 - 1/4 inch of in and out play. Is this normal?
