Oshawa,
On my way to school this morning, I noticed my oil pressure gauge reading quite low... Fearing the worse, I pulled over to check things out... when i pushed the clutch in the car stalled. Checked the oil and nothing was on the stick. I lost all my oil... Question is, since I noticed this pretty quickly (engine was only running for approx. 1 minute in this state), do you think i might have destroyed this engine? I didn't try to start it after it stalled and I immediately called in a flat-bed. Do you think that because the engine stalled that it is ceased? It's in the shop now, damn i hope my baby is alright. The car only has 31,000km's on it... Anyways, any insight would be appreciated.

Well, just so you know, I just went through that very same thing, and I spun a bearing. Did you happen to hear any knocking? I would put oil in it...obviously, and then take it to your mechanic, do a compression check, etc. But whos to tell you if your motor is messed up from here? anything can happen....in my case....it sucks.
What year is your DSM? :talon:

It's a 1991 Tsi AWD. Didn't hear anything unusual at all... I think I might have caught this early enough, don't know... I noticed pretty quick when the oil pressure gauge dropped. It's in the shop, I flatbedded it there. Haven't heard from them yet but I have my fingers crossed.

Turns out that the nut that holds the oil pump sprocket on backed off (how, i dunno). I guess it mucked up the threads on the balance shaft (sound right?) So I guess the prudent way to go would be to eliminate the balance shafts at this point, correct? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes I agree, eliminate them. y the way, did it fuk up the engine or not?

What's the detailed before during and after? I am curious.

An engine can run for quite some time without oil pressure. The damage it causes is proportional to the condition of your oil and how long you run it.
We drained all the oil out of one of our old forklift motors once to see how long it took to lock up. With no oil, the bastard ran with the gas floored for a good minute or so before it started knocking. OMG

same thing happened to me...sorta. On my car, the sprocket broke for the front balance shaft. The balane shaft blew out the bearing and gave me low oil pressure for 2 years. I didn't know it was like that until recently when I went to do a BS elimination. Now I'm doing a full engine rebuild.

I was always wondering why every time I serviced my timing belt the balance shaft belt was always thrashed. :p

Something like that just happened to a car i had to fix. The oil pump housing separated and all the oil drain.. The engine just died...lets just say that the engine was...how do you say...done.
