I just started on my engine rebuild on a 91 4g63T and when I put the new rings on the new pistions the oil ring catches when I am trying to drop it in the cylinder! The engine is bored out 20 over and the pistons and rings are also 20 over. It seems like the jagged oil ring is to big (long) and it is catching the top of the cylinder.

Could it not be bored out enough???

Also I heard that if you heat up the ring it will shrink??? Which doesnt sound to true.

Any imput will help!!!

Thanks,
Kyle

DEFFINATELY DO NOT HEAT IT. Did you stagger the rails for the oil rings? also did you make sure that the oil ring is butted, not overlapped. Did you install the rails correctly? Did you take any measure ments?

Not trying to be an ass, but I must ask the simple questions first. Are you using a piston ring compressor, cause if not, the two compression rings are gonna get stuck even worse.

If that is not an issue, I would first remove the ring and inspect the ring groove and look for small debris that could be stopping the ring from fully compressing into the groove.

Get back to us and let us know what you find.

are you checking the ring gap? it dont take very long to check all the ring gaps, and they should be.

No im not overlaping the ring.

No debris in the groves.

The compression rings slide right in.

Also no im not using a ring compressor. Can I go to autozone or a local auto parts dealer and get one?

and there would be the reason. yes you can get one from autozone, no way you will ever put that thing together without the ring compressor. :dsm:

have you ever built an engine?! Use a ring compressor and you should know if anything was bored too small or to big. ( unless you didn't have them set wall clearances? ) I hope at least you were smart enough to have the machine shop number the pistons so you know which cylinder was finished for which piston.

FIRST GET A RING COMPRESSOR!!! also, did the machine shop rehone the cylinders? sometimes if the block had some miles on it the top of the bore will have a taper wear in it, usually it nees ground out or the rings will not go in. i have had that problem before.

If doing a rebuild, check the Haynes/Chilton's manual for a list of needed tools. You will see a ring compressor, torque wrench and the like on the list. It sounds like you don't have the book or you would have known about using a ring compressor. You really should invest the $12 or so in a manual to do the job correctly.

The ring compressor is a fantastic tool that I should of thought about before being a dumb ass and trying to put the rings in without. I got the ring compressor and they went right in!!! Thanks alot for all the help!!!

So what did you set your ring gaps to when you fitted them?
What kind of ring filer do you have?
What pistons did you go with and what did you settle on for the piston to wall clearance?

Steve

yea I was wondering this myself. Did you check all your bearing clearances? Are all the pistons in the correct cylinders they were machined for? This is all important if you want to get more than a few hundred miles out of your engine.
