So I was attempting to install rings on a set of OEM 2G pistons today and ran into some trouble. The rings are Federal Mogul and I verified the part number on them to be certain they were not the wrong parts.
The last rings (oil rings/separator) are going in or on with a lot of resistance and are very tight. I have installed rings before and never had them this tight, they usually move around far more freely. I dont think I can get the actual 2 rings in properly. (yes the top 2 rings do fit fine) I then tried to pull out another NEW OEM 2G pistons to try that, it turns out the same results and is very tight. I guess I may have to order a set of OEM rings, was going to initially but found these sitting around the shop new in box. Any ideas on this or should I just buy new ones?
thanks

Always install the wavy seperator ring first before putting the two outer rings on. The wavy ring has a tiny lip in the back that helps keep it in place once the other two rings are in.

Thanks, but yes thats how I did it...and always have done it in the past. Its just super tight and def not right. I ordered OEM ones so oh well hopefully that clears up the problem

So I got my new set today from mitsu... they fit perfect or more or less as they should! Oh well I guess the federal moguls I had were made wrong. Their part numbers are correct!?

For some reason most parts stores have the same part number for 1g and 2g pistons the only place I could find the right rings besides going to the stealership was on ebay from some guy called the partsdinosaur, just thought that might help some people out there.

same shit happen to me, stock evo8 pistons on stock evo 8 rings, ####ers just fall through the bore when on piston, a local well know machine shops for dsm sepcialties recommended I get the psitons cut to accept 1g oil rings isntead of trying to get another set from mitsu, he told me one of the reasosn be is that the evo oil rings are like 2mm thick and 1g ones are 3mm, which should seat better. Also told me that the 2mm ring is a very uncommon thing and doesnt know why mitsu woudl do it in the first place. Just wanna let ya know, you aint the only one this shit happen to.

Yea, I ordered a set of rings for my 1g 6bolt and they were totally wrong. the first ring was too wide and the oil rings were way off. I had to go back and order a set of Beck-Arnley rings. They worked perfect. I think they are exact oem replacement. I think Beck-Arney only does oem replacement (like GP Sorensen).
