oil return line leaking could i just ...

ok as it says my oil return line is leaking from around were the lil flex section is on it

could i just cut the flex part out and use some type of hose from auto zone to replace it and clamp it down ?

Simple answer

Get a new one.

I wouldn't half ass any oil lines, but thats just me and possibly 1/2-3/4 of the forum.

It's only 40 bucks or so and that's worth it, rather than blowing turbo, or locking up a engine.

The above is a good enough reason for me. Also I just gave one away a week ago,so there out there.

You ,MAY,and I say MAY with caution do it for a VERY short time,like a week at MOST,but more like 2-3days. I don't recamend it, but you MAY get it to work.

When I did my first oil change in my car I didnt notice that oil return line at all. I really didnt know much about the car then. When I replaced my starter, I had to get under the car, so I wanted to clean up some oily dirt on the bottom of the engine. This is when I noticed the leaking oil return line. So I figured the best thing for me to do would be to snug the bolts up (they were quite loose). I cleaned up the area with a papertowel, and I figured it was problem solved.... not quite. I just flushed my motor with some Gunk Engine Oil flush, and put in some fresh oil tonight. When I was under the car, I noticed the return line was leaking again, and it seemed a little worse. I think that I will just get a whole new line and forget about monkeying around with mickey mousing anything. I would suggest that for anyone with this problem as well.

Who wants to give their DSM second grade treatment. Well if a person needs to temp. fix it, then I would probably do the same, but I would fix it right when I got the chance. I plan on getting a new one in a couple of days.

Mine had a slight leak at the spot where it mated to the oil pan, I used some RTV high-temp silicone (black, I think?) to create a gasket at that point, hasn't given me much trouble since.

You're not going to blow a turbo or lock an engine just because the return line is leaking. Now if it's truly leaking as bad as he says and it gets to the point of the engine running out of oil, then yeah. But even a homemade fix of using a section of hose would be good enough for a while if it doesn't leak, or even if it only leaks a little.

Just get a new one. You could pick up some gaskets too while your at the dealership if your feeling good. I don't really like RTV'n stuff if I can avoid it.

well it would be temparly. i also dont like to half a$$ anything on my talon and i would normaly wait till i get the right parts to do it. but my daily driver was sold and now this is my car for the winter so in till i can get new ss oil return im going to try this.


i just need to know what kind of line to use i dont want to melt anything and make it worse ?

would fuel line work ? from an auto parts store

Best if you can find a silicone elbow from an industrial supply or truck repair shop. Use fuel line clamps instead of hose clamps. The drain's not under pressure, so it doesn't have to be cranked down, but fuel clamps are still better to use.

You don't want to half ass anything on our cars,there a little picky. Sure that was a extreme case, but we're not sure how mechanically inclined this guy is. Sure it proably won't lock up the engine, or blow the turbo, but it could and has happened before.

now do you mean its leaking from where the flex hose goes over the threaded part on the fitting that bolts into the pan?

then by all means, get a small enough hose clamp and use it to tighen the hose onto the fitting.

mine was also loose at that area, and im sure it leaked oil a bit, but if youre doing oil changes every 3 months, its not a problem. in that time frame, you could leak maybe 1/2 a quart.

but if its leaking from the oil return gasket to the pan, just get over it. all DSM's that have ever taken off their oil return for a newer one leak there. even my buddies last resort with gobs of jbweld didnt work(i feel sorry for the poor sap who inherits that car and tries to take the oil return-pan fitting off), oil still found its way from the return.

and its leaking about a qt a day its bad. im going to try a few thing to day if that dont work ill just take the oil return line off my awd for now it a project car anyway thanks for the help
