Oil return line gaskets...use RTV or not?

Hey, just wondering if I am supposed to put the gaskets on dry or if I am supposed to use RTV right along with the gaskets?

i always use just a lil RTV on my gaskets

remember just a lil

you dont want it in your engine later on

I dont use rtv with my return line gaskets. I have use copper spray on the return line when its not an oem gasket and just a paper one, works very well. It was actually the gasket Jus supplied me when he rebuilt my turbo.

I know people who have used rtv, but they use very little, just to hold the gasket in place. If you do use it, do not be generous, no more than a 1/8 inch this bead. This is what happens when you go RTV crazy, I bought the turbo and removed the line to find this:

It feels like there are some definite rules and experiences as far as doing each petty thing on these vehicles. I guess with the 4g63 being around so long there are enough stories on what to do and what not to do.

I use copper spray but on the gasket that goes to the oil pan I use 2 gaskets with copper spray. Found that to be the best way and no leaks

This thread might help. But you can use some but dont put a bunch on there. People think there sealing up the whole world. I never used copper spray but as said above you can use it as well. The gasket should seal. Just put a dab on it to hold it in place.

I usually use a very thin layer on both sides, along with on the bolt threads. It's also a good idea to use aluminum crush washers on the bolts since it comes that way from the factory.

If you do go the RTV way, clean both surfaces of oil traces, bolt up, and let RTV cure for more then a couple hours. Otherwise it will all be in vain and you'll just do it all over again. Remember, RTV is more annoying to clean up then just a dry gasket though.

This is for the drain to pan gasket. Turbo to drain gasket is way easier to get away with.

I always use a new gasket and new crush washers and make sure the surfaces are clean. I have never used RTV on an oil return line and have never had a leak.
