if i bought a new oil pump and it came with the gear cover on it why would i have to remove the cover to align the gears? shouldnt they all ready be aligned?

do i just insert the balance shaft into the oil pump and align the oil pump sprocket to the timing mark and call it a day?

No in order to install the stubby shaft, take that cover off. I just got done with mine. Set the two timing marks together, and pre-lube it with moly based grease or assembley lube. The stubby shaft has a bolt fromt the old Rear bal. shaft that has to be installed to keep the stubby shaft in place.

Check on VFAQ.com also, thats where I got my instructions for my install. Its under the engine section.

Good Luck,
Richard

im not installing an eliminator kit... i have the stock shaft

i bought a new oil pump and was wondering if i have to align the gears inside a new pump? i.e removing the new cover and aligning them.. wouldnt they all ready be aligned?

and when phasing the rear balance shaft do i just need to get it where the screw driver goes in all the way with the oil pump sprocket close to its timing mark and in the position where the shaft cant be move clockwise or counterclockwise?

also what about the front balance shaft? how do i know thats in phase?

In that case, remove the cover from the new pump and make sure that the marks are lined up. The front balance shaft has marks on the sprocket to line it up. Look at the service manual for the correct way to make sure that the rear balance shaft is in the right position and not 180 out. :dsm:

hey im not sure exactly what your talking about but if you mean your trying to align your oil pump with the timing marks this is how you do it.

1. there is a bolt on the side of the engine towards the firewall its next to the support for the intake and should not be holding anything on to the engine.

2. remove that and have the timing marks on the oil pump gear ligned up it will be facing the 9 o clock position and will lign up with the casting now you should be able to stick a screw driver all the way in that hole if its in the correct position if it doesnt turn the gear one revolution and ligned up again and check to see if it will go all the way in the hole now.

3. Then install the timing belt and dont forget to remove the screwdriver and put that bolt back in.

Also the timing marks on the oil pump gear will only line back up every so many revolutions so if it was right when you first put the belt on dont worry about that just make sure all the other timing marks line up every revolution
