Oil Pump bad, first steps = ?

I just purchased a 1991 Eclipse GS-T. The kid who I bought it from said that when he started it after installing the rebuilt tranny it made a loud screeching noise and then quit. It was diagnosed to have a bad oil pump! I am extremely new around ANY type of motor and am starting with the infamous 4g63 :D! Can someone tell me what I might want to look for that would be the result of a bad oil pump? Bad rod, piston, block??? I guess I am asking what are the most common problems that result from a oil pump going bad? Thanks!
 
Its pretty hard to just tell you exactally what happens. I have no idea why a newly rebuilt tranny would cause a bad oil pump. Who diagnosed the pump failure?

If there is a pump failure, a few seconds without oil isnt going to ruin much. But if the car has been run for more than about half a minute you could be looking at mild damage and anything close to a minute could mean a new engine soon.

To test for a bad pump, check the oil level and turn some oil out of the car. Then add some oil to the crankcase and start the car...if the car runs okay for a second then dies or starts screaming then you're early into the stages of pump failure. You might want to check for compression after that. Also listen for alot of ticking and scraping.

How many miles does the engine have?

Honestly, if I were you Id pull out the engine and replace the timing belt, water pump, oil pump, accessory belt, and replace the gaskets. Not only because of the danger of pump failures but its just good measure.
 
well, i fyou really wanna try, you could pull of the oil filter, take out the mpi fuse (one of the fuses on the plastic box on your battery) or just pull the plug out of the cam angle sensor("cas" - which is that round thing connected on the top right corner of your valvecover) which by doing either so will cause your car not to spark, so when you turn the key, it will just crank and by doing so, when someone is cranking it, look if there is oil shootin gout where the oil filter was, if it is shooting out, then your pump should be fine, if it isnt, then its most likely fawked. Oh, but a loud screeching is usually how they fail. Just a thought.
 
but unfortunantly if the oil pump had been goin bad and he drove it like that, on top of the engine being questionalbly damaged on the internals, it couldve started damaging the turbo also by improper oil levels so check to make sure the turbo compressor fan is still tight and isnt goin to seal up and what not ### if it does then your talking about serious damage to the engine and a rebuild if the turbo seals up while your driving, it could throw the compression outta wack and blow the engine. You might want to do what the other guy said and try to replace as much as possible while your at it, and also get the turbo checkd, and yea its money but a rebuild would be worse, and consider the time the car would be down and youd be catchin a bus or sumthing...;.
 
No problem. I haven't torn into the motor yet, but when I do I am already planning to just rebuild it. I have always wanted to learn anyways, so what a better way then to actaully do it.

Well ive had 2 oil pumps go. And they both locked up which caused the timing belt to jump. I would check out the timing to see if it jumped teeth. Chances are it did and ###### hit the pistons and valves. I got very luck myself and didnt damage any.
