So went to look at a 96 awd today.....and noticed when ideling the oil pressure was low.......now searching I found out this is normal for these cars. Since the oil pump is driven by an accessory belt then the gauge would rise while reving the car in neutral since operating the engine at higher speed runs the oil pump faster. Correct?

What drives the accessory belt? Also why would there be oil on the engine block and alot of the accessories around it........but not smelling buring oil under the hood? What could be leaking? The engine was replaced after the original spun a rod bearing and a junkyard one was dropped in. Pics below....

How low is low? And are you reading from the stock gauge, or an after market? The stock one is crap. Anyways my car at idle has between 15-20 psi oil pressure at op. temp(surge FTL), and rises ~10 psi per 1k rpms. Also and someone correct me if I'm wrong but the oil pump is driven indirectly from the timing belt, along with everything else(water pump etc.) As for the oil all over everything clean it up a little if you can and see if you can find out where the oil is coming from.

No water pump and power steering and alternator are acc. The oil pump is driven right off the timing belt along with the balance shafts if you still have them. I wish my oil pressure was better. But my car is beat. Thats why im building a new one.

The valve cover gasket is usually the culprit to having oil everywhere. It leaks down the engine, and oil is sprayed everywhere. At idle, the gauge will read low. As long as it rises with rpm, its probably just fine. Now, if you rev the engine, or drive the car, and oil pressure doesnt rise, you have a problem. That is, if the gauge is reading correctly.

My factory gauge starts ant Dead 0 and rises to where most people sit at idle....

changed Two sensors and still the same, I am afraid the dash cluster is messed up,
But have been driving the car now 4 years and had no oil issues...

It's the factory gauge and it's a little above the bottom line but when revved it rises to a lttle less than half, then drops again, but drops to a point higher than before.

i noticed in the pics that the sensor on the pass. side of the valve cover was missing. could that cause a problem?

I think as long as the oil pressure light doesn't come on, it's fine. I've had the light flicker on whenever using the A/C due to the fact my ISC does not correct for it anymore and the RPMs drop to 400ish.
