All oil sender threads are merged here.

going down the road today i noticed my oil pressure gauge was reading nothing or zero depending on how you look at it..on my stock gauge..

i immediatly pulled over to check my oil and found that it and the rest of my car was fine..its still running fine and everything so i came home to check vfaq.com and it said that my sensor could be the culprit..

so my question is there a website or link to a page that will show my hw to check my sensor??? and or replace what is needed to read my oil pressure... or shuold i just say #### it and get a aftermarket gauge right now because its more accurate anyways?..

yeah im new around here so go easy on me..but i didnt think this was a dumb question or anything so thats why i put it here..

i've done some research, and im not going to worry about it: my car never over heats or reads close to it, the oil pressure reads fine while i drive (and the low oil pressure at idle seems to be a problem with many DSM's) nobody's peferct, i still love my :talon:

hello everyone i have a 97 eclipse and im trying to install a oil pressure and water tempeture gauges and im just wondering were i cant tap into the 420

Im having a problem with my oil pressure gauge not moving. When I bought the car the owner said he just put a new oil sending unit in the 6bolt motor but I'm not sure if it is a stock replacement. When comparing it to my 7bolt it looks a little different. I all the wires look good and are hooked, Im not sure what the problem could be. Here is a pic (sorry for pic quality, taken on my phone)

Too bad that picture isn't a tad higher so we could see the wire on the other sensor.
I wonder if they got swapped by mistake.

I show the yellow wire as being for the warning light and the blue one for the gauge but that wire attached to the pressure sender looks yellow.

I can get you another one, ill check the wires to see if they have been swapped

Here is another, looks like they both have yellow wires:coy:, the sending unit is a solid yellow and the light is a yellow and black

So looking at what I have available for the 2G wiring it's a little different between the 1G and 2G colors. The 97-99 FSM says that the pressure sender should be a yellow with red stripe and the warning light a yellow wire. First you can try grounding one at a time and see which causes the warning light to turn on and then put the other on the pressure sender. I think there is a good chance they are swapped.

Well I tried swapping wires and that made the oil light come on, so would that point the finger at the sending unit? To make matters worse my temp gauge isn't working now, I tried messing with the sensor wire but it didn't budge :(

I'd be very nervous about that fitting on the housing like that. That brass is a very soft metal and breaks easily. Especially on motors with alot of vibration. I've had mine break off while going down the road, it broke off into the housing. Another friend of mine had the same happen. Its never fun trying to drill that shit out and fit a plug in there on the side of the road.

I've seen this picture a thousand times, but it doesn't look like my 95 gsx houseing (or I'm using the good pressure tap for the turbo feed).

I'm looking to install the sender for my prosport premium oil pressure gauge. I gather that the housing is 3/8 BSPT so I would need these two items to adapt to the 1/8npt sender...Correct?

The next question is, where do I tap into the housing to get a good pressure source? I don't want to tee off of the factory sender because that would be more weight swinging off of the housing than i'd feel comfortable with. I would just like to use the 2 adapters and the sender hanging from an unused port. Can someone help? Please..?

I also have a jacked up oil pressure sensor. I haven't seen this problem yet though; my gauge is pegged all the time - ignition on or off. Whether the wire is connected or not it just sits up there. I thought it must be grounded some where but I can't find any exposed wire. It had been working until I replaced the alternator. My dummy light connector is toast too (next fix) and I do have a green/white mystery wire hanging around but I think that's for the power steering. Any thoughts?

I disassembled my Instrument cluster as i had the problem where my oil pressure gauge was stuck in one position. I removed the oil pressure/boost pressure combo from my cluster and found that the actuator for the oil pressure sensor is a bimetallic "U" shaped piece with several wraps of wire wrapped around the top which heats it up. The end of the "U" shaped piece which actuates the needle has a "peg" attached to the end of it that fits into a slotted piece of plastic which is attached to the spindle on which the needle is mounted. As current heats up the wire around the upper end of the U, it causes the bimetallic material to flex and push the against the plastic slotted piece, thus moving the needle. In my case, the needle wasn't moving because a piece of the slotted plastic piece had melted and more or less "welded" the "peg" into a stationary position relative to the plastic slot. Freeing the plastic slot (i pushed the oil pressure needle "up" (relative to its reading) until it came loose, then disassembled the gauge (2 screws) and removed the plastic blob from the "peg". Testing with a 9 volt battery now has the gauge moving up and down as current is applied and removed. (Once i have the car back together i expect to find that it will now read the output from the gauge sender.)
My hunch is, at some point the gauge was shorted from the sensor (12 volts throughput) for a lengthy period of time and got hot enough to melt the end of the slot off, when it cooled, it got stuck.
Hopefully that helps someone.

Does either sensor affect if the fuel pump comes on when starting? I have to crank my car a few times before it starts and I'm wondering if low oil pressure or a bad pressure sensor could be causing it.

I know on Chevrolets the oil pressure switch controls when the fuel pump turns on and figured this might be the same issue.

Thanks

No there isn't a low oil pressure fuel pump cut off.

I just got a electirc oil press guage from glow shift. Where should I put the sending unit? I know theres 2 places on the oil filter housing. Or could I just take out the stock one and put it in its place? Which would be the best? The sending unit is a 1/8 NPT. Are they the same size on the oil filter housing?

I have a 1g and the past two 1g's i've put them on i've just takin out the lower stock one and put it in. Use some tephlon tape on the threads.

-search oil pressure gauge installation.

okk, do i have to drain the oil if im gonna take the bolt out of the oil filter housing? Or it wont matter because its in the pan?
