I have a prosport oil pressure gauge in my car. at idle it reads zero. is this normal? when i push the throttle it climbs, when crusing at 2500rpms its at 21-22psi at 3500rpms it reads 30psi, and continues all the way up to about 70psi. my question is...is this normal for an aftermarket gauge? i figure at idle there should be some sort of oil pressure. ive double and triple checked the wiring so im sure i have everything wired correctly and all my connections are good. theyre all soldered.any thoughts would be helpful thanks in advanced

There is a lot of confusion with stock oil pressure gauges in some vehicles, and the DSM falls in this catagory:

All the gauge shows you that there is oil pressure present, not the actual pressure for lbs per sq, in.

Idle pressure should be as mention above, 6-10 lbs sq inch at idle. Idiot light sensor ususally trips on when the pressure drops below 7lbs.

If you pop the oil cap off and see oil swirling around in the head at idle, you got sufficent pressure.

Now, if you get pressure at normal rpms and it drops to zero at idle, then you've got weak connecting rod bearings that isn't holding the oil pressure in around the crank journals where it belongs at the idle mark on the gauge. the oil is actually leaking around the sides of the connecting rod.

Now, when you start a cold motor, of course, the pressure will be higher until the oil gets hot and thins down to almost water consistency.

It's not a dangerous thing since you're still getting pressure up to the head, but it's a factor that one needs to be concerned with.

This above factors is what I'm experiencing with my 4G63T: low pressure at idle- needle at zero on a hot motor at idle, but decent pressure at road speed conditions. I take the cap off and oil is swirling everywhere under the head cover...good oil flow for sure. My condition has been that way since I got the car 27k miles ago and it still runs great..but I do know that my oil consumption is a bit above normal .. about 1100 miles on a quart, which is letting me know of my weak connecting rod bearings..

my idiot light isnt on so i guess im getting sufficient pressure. i checked the head as well.seems fine. my oil consumption is fine dont really loose to much. it must be my aftermarket gauge reading wrong. what are the chances of that?
