oil or no oil in tranny?

i just picked up a tranny off a buddy, what i would like to know is can i fill the tranny with grear oil? the tranny is out and just laying on the floor with no flywheel or clutch parts.
If so what hole/bolt would I have to fill it in too?

nope,it will just run out the axle holes.it has to be installed in the car to fill it.

k well i got caps to cover the axle holes, so once thats cover i should be fine to fill it up with gear oil?

Why do you want to fill it when it's out of the car? Like was said before, it's just going to drain out the axle holes. Even if you have something the plug them for now, when you have the trans back in the car and go to put the axles in, a lot of the trans fluid is just going to run out as soon as the plugs come off.

Nevertheless, the fill plug is on the front side of the trans about halfway between the bottom and top. It's a 17mm. And it takes 80/90w gear lube.

It should be fine to fill it up with the proper gear lube outside of the car. Afterall, it is supposed to be filled with the stuff while installed, so if you can cap off all of the holes so it doesn't leak out, it won't be a problem. In fact, it will most likely help prevention of rust or other forms of deterioration until you install it.

As for where to put the lube... there's a VFAQ on how to change the tranny oil for all turbocharged 4G63's, just follow where they say to put it.

but like what was said before,itll all just run back out when you pull the plugs and intall the axles.do it right,just leave it dry.it wont rust,those gears stay covered with oil for a long time.gear oil is really thick.

It is a different car but when I swapped my tranny out, I didnt put any in until it was inside my car. Whatever works for you tho dude.
