the valve cover gasket. the seals that go around the spark plug wells are leaking. change the gasket. :thumb:

Yea, it could be the gasket, but usually its the o-ring gaskets that go around the spark plug holes that leak, then fill them up with oil. If you said it was just on the top part, then maybe there is a crack in it. Its aluminum, so if you are like 99% of people on this site, you have probably over-torqued those bolts that hold the spark plug cover on. It might have cracked all the way through, I've seen that happen on my buddies car...he tightened them soo much, oil started seeping through one of the bolt holes.

No he said it wasn't down in the plug holes. The problem is your blasted oil cap. Mine has been doing that to me also. You can either go to mitsi. and get a new gasket for it...like 2 bucks I belive or get a new oil cap( they looked retarted tho) from advance or auto zone.

Mine had the same problem. The oil cover gasket can get hard and useless after awhile. All you have to do is change the gasket. To make sure, take off the oil cap and feel the gasket. If it is hard then its time to change it. The gasket should have a rubber like feel.

i havn't taken off the vavle cover since i've gotten the car..but i think it may be the gasket cause i see some oil deposit around the outside of the valve cover...so yeah...looks to me like the gasket too...thanks

hey quick question..i took out a spark plug and their was oil on the bottom of it..if anyone one knows why this is ? what caused it ? how to fix it ? and what problems it will cause ? thanks

I think it is a common problem with 420s...The spark plug o-ring gaskets tend to go out fairly quickly. Pop off the valve cover, replace them and see if that helps.

It's just the valve cover gasket. I've changed one on a probe, really easy. Not too much to worry, JUST BE CAREFUL not to over torque the bolts because they WILL BREAK.

Thanks guys..your help is greatly appreciated ! What will happen if i run with the oil in there, could it cause my car to cut off, cause it does that sometimes.. :thumbdown

if you leave oil in your plug wells then it can cause the spark to ground out through the block and not through the plug which can cause a hesitation feeling while under load.. what i did was keep the plugs in.. take a rag and wipe the oil out the best i could, then used compressed air and blasted as much out of the crevices as i could, then wipe, then blow, so on

The spark plug o-rings are included in the valve cover gasket. It shouldn't affect performance unless its messing with the spark from the wire to the plug. Depends on how much oil is in there.

I noticed oil on the #4 spark plug (threads and electrode) in december and i decided to change my valve cover gaskets.... well its not any better. There doesnt seem to be any oil on the top of the plug (ceramic) or the wires.... But my valve cover does have a small crak by the cap and the oil tends to settle by that corner of the spark plug deck. Do you think I need a new valve cover or is it something more serious?? ANy help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bryan Tracy

It's probably dripping down from the ring gasket, part of the valve cover gasket kit.

if i pull of my valve cover agin, should i put some gasket silicone down too? See if that will help? It is a fresh gasket set... like 3 weeks old.
I guess its weird that its not on the top of the plug just the threads and electrode

Yes, I always use RTV on the valve cover. You can run a compression test to make sure it's not something else.

i was changing my spark plug wires today and one of the spark plug wells had so much oil in it it covered the spark plug up. what could this be from? the spark plug seemed like it was in there as tight as normal.

haha, i just realized i read that wrong. i was telling you what would be wrong if oil was in the combustion chamber. ya the only thing that would get oil in the spark plug wells is those 4 circular spark plug well gaskets

to replace them do i just need them and a new valve cover gasket? it looks like it would be an easy job, like it would take less then a hour to do, am i right or wrong?

yes, get a valve cover set and it will come with everything. be careful not to overtighten the cover bolts (2-3 lbs) or you will crack the cover. yes it only takes about an hour. as old as the car is i would still check the oil cap seal first, especially if it is the #1 OR #4 plug that is full of oil. my .02
