oil on spark plugs [Merged 11-7] oily wire wires cover valley well wells

I had that problem the first thing I would check would be the valve cover gasket and I forget the name of the other gaskets. But the 4 circular ones under the spark plug holes. Pretty Cheap to do and might solve your problem. Also if your oil cap is leaking it could be dripping down.

Yea, chances are your valve cover gasket is bad. When the o-rings that go around the spark plug wells go bad, they often leak a bit on the spark plug or even fill up the spark plug well with oil completely.

Will it harm it if i leave it? Kinda seems like a bi*** to take the valve cover off,is there a write up or something?

Well if oil is getting on your spark plug it'll defenitely effect how your plugs are acting, obviously. It's really easy to do. If your new buy a manual, search before you do it. Basically you take a 10mm socket, take all the screws out, unplug your spark plug wires, pcv valve from the top left and oil breather tube( the one on the left) , budge the valve cover (if not you can lightly use a rubber mallet). Once it's off clean all the surfaces. Take off the gaskets and put on the new ones. Just how you took them off. Use high temp sealant on the half circle parts of the valve cover gasket, not on the long top and bottom areas of the gasket.( you can look this up for more detail ) Same with the spark plug rings (no sealant) Put on the valve cover tighten the bolts with a torque wrench to specifications. Retorque if necessary after your run your car for a bit.Plug everything else back on. Thats basically it.

The best fix for this is the gaskets with RTV being put in 4 spots on the 2gnt. Using nothing but a sealer can cause problems later on if you ever develop a leak later on. RTV is a bi*** to try and clean out if you ever have to go back in there.

Oil on the spark plugs will cause the spark to jump through the oil and to the head instead of jumping across the spark plug gap. Oil contamination on the spark plug boots causes the same thing even after you fix the oil leak. This is why it's best to replace the spark plug tube seals and valve cover gasket as soon as you find them to be leaking to prevent driveability problems.

So I went outside to clean up stuff under the hood and i decided to check my plugs. I took off the plug cover and noticed oil around the first plug wire, took the wire off the spark plug and sure enough...puddle of oil down there. I took the plug out and it was completely soaked so I cleaned off all the oil put it back in, started her up and a little cloud of grayish blue smoked came out the exhaust for about 5 minutes then stopped. Took the plug back out and all the oil was burnt off. I made sure the plug was tightly screwed in when i put it back. Was this just because my plug was loose or could some seals be bad?

It could be one of your valve cover gaskets thats goes around the spark plug holes. Pretty easy to take it off and just replace them incase. You may also want to go ahead and replace the PCV valve as it can cause oil to get into the cylinders if it is bad also. Its cheap and easy to replace also. Cheaper and easier than the valve cover gasket even. Make sure you get the whole kit for the valve cover though, sounds like it is more than likely your culprit.

NAPA or any auto parts store will be fine. I also run the pcv valve that I got from O'Reilly's with no ill effects, but then again that has only been about 2k miles. Also, if you search on here a little there are some good posts with images showing you where you need to use some grey rtv at on the gasket.

I decided not to, heard from numerous people that they have never used rtv and never had problems with leaks, also dsmtalk said rtv can lead to more leaking problems. If it leaks, then i learn a lesson...back to the real issue when is it ok to drive?

The RTV was the real issue. If you used it then you would have to wait for it to cure. If you didn't use then there is no reason why you can't drive it. All you did was change the valvecover gasket correct?
