oil on spark plugs [Merged 11-7] oily wire wires cover valley well wells

Umm I don't know if it would have THAT major an effect. But its on the drivers side. It's a REALLY thin black wire, and when you take off the valve cover you have to remove it, but Mitsu made it easy and made it like a plug so you can seperate it. So now theres no more oil in the wells? You may wanna check that again. Is the plug new? If you didn't clean it right that may be harmful. Last check - unplug the battery (reset the ecu) you never know... and wait 5 mins and then put it back and try it. You could also try revving the car up to redline when in neutral there might be some oil in the cylinder that will get it out (watch out for smoke mine was crazy) haha. Good luck tell us if any of this helps

The gound mentioned in all probability was not attached to the valve cover originally, more likely if a factory installed it was attached to the intake manifold. If it is a non factory addition it could have been to prevent radio interference, electrolysis, or to improve overall conductivity. By it's self there is no relationship to your problem; however; if it was the only ground conductor it would have caused the engine grounding to find another path which was the throttle cables and burned them.
Ok?

BTW is this your car or some friends mom? It's getting pretty iffy when it's not your car and asking people to give of their time to diagnose through third party problems which are hard enough in real life much less dealing with written words for people who are not members here. We certainly don't want to see people cheated but we can't fix all the cars in the world. Before you think I'm too caloused consider this: You wouldn't go into a doctors office and start asking for medical advice for someone in the next state or down the block from you. Why do so few people have so little respect for professional mechanics that they will ask for free advice when your doctor won't give it to you, you can't get it from the Emergency room of a hospital.??????????????

The only difference I see between Doctors and machanics is our patients don't talk to us and we have to play a guessing game of whre it hurts and why it's sick.

Cheers,
GTM

it was my friends carOMG sorry for the hassle.
the oil leak is gone, it was the valve cover gaskets, i was wrong but now i know better
it was dying in low rpm cause the throttle was messed up, the cable was lose, we fixed that and its fine now. guess it was just a coincidence that it happened when we was doing the spark plug stuff

Hope I didn't come across in a rude manner, I/we are a friendly bunch and it's easy to get carried away when asking or offering help even when your intentions are well meaning.

Since _you_ were one of the major players in the situation you had every belief you were not overstepping the spirit of DMStuners or any other board which depends on members contributing to solving a problem. Once in a while I feel the need to call attention to the complexities surrounding this online communications experience. With membership having trippeled in the year since I joined, shades of gray get missed by some who become quite antoginistic. Thank you for your politeness and understanding.

Yup, I agree it probably was just a coincidence it happened when the plug etc. were being changed. As a professional this is one of those thing you really hate to have happen. You then have to explain to the customer while we were changing you wiper blades the transmission exploded. What was a lousy $10 job now becomes a $1000 job and it really leads to suspicions of fraud when non esists. Bizarre things happen, the honest customer will say yes I've been having noises or trouble but didn't think it would breakd just yet. The other group start looking through the Yellow pages for a lawyer. I once offered to look at someone's boat who I knew and who was having problems getting proper repairs. (yes another skill of mine) His reply "you can't afford to work on my problem because I make my living suing people who screw up my property". No wonder he has trouble getting things fixed for nobody in their right mind would work for him...

Cheers,
GTM

Whew, been a long time away from the board!

So, Obviously the valve cover gasket and plug well gaskets, prolly the plug and wire, but do ya'all think that the grounding screwed up my coil?

Buying parts today, and it is running like crap, so would like to get all that I need in one shot...

Thanks in advance!! :thumb:

no point in assuming the coil is bad, you would be just wasting your time/money.....although it can happen if you run the car like that for a LONG time, but like i said......

i keep seeing small pools of oil in the well where the spark plugs sit in the valve cover. I can't figure out where the oil is comming from?? any input would be great, thanks.

Most likely it's just spillover from putting oil in. I freaked the first time I saw it too. :)

this is my 1st eclipse but in past experiences iv had the oil cap leak and caused the same freek out.

I am pretty sure that the oil cap is leaking. I suggest that you get a new PCV valve and a new oil cap gasket from the dealer (I think they arn't more than $2). You may want to bend the two 'teeth' on the oil cap to get a better hold also.

This should solve your problem.

Sounds like the gaskets around your plug holes are leaking, you might replace the valve cover gasket and plug gaskets to see if that helps.

I got the new gasket but am unsure.I think I read to put it over the top of the old one or should I take the old one off.And it doesn't appear sticky.Does it get held in someone or do I need to glue it on..??

You have to take out the old one and clean off all the excess crap. The new one will stay in when you press it in. Look your valve cover over real good I have had 2 with small cracks. Be sure to not overtighten it either.

Replace the gaskets with new ones(throw away the old ones), check the valve cover spark plugs valley for cracks(especially towards the front of the engine) use little dabs of sealant at parting lines and semi-circular plug and replace the PCV Valve .
Enjoy.

I have oil in my spark plug wells and i've read a few threads but what could of caused this???

Lately car has been stumbling and on occasion starting and then dying. I tried to start my car today and got no spark. Took all the plugs off and found almost an inch of oil in the 1 and 4 spark plug holes. Took plugs out and tested for spark, nothing. Any suggestions on what to check for?
Thank you

Would the oil in the spark plug holes cause the car to not get any spark?
If I change o seals do I have to change the valve cover gasget also, is it recomended?

They're not really O rings, the're round seals that are part of the valve cover kit. You replace them all at the same time.

Go EASY on the valve cover bolts. The covers crack before you can say boo.

 Story of every DSM'ers life who--in anticipation-- put there new blingin chrome/powdercoated valve cover on and "pop" muhahaha

I replaced the valve cover gasget, coil pack, spark plug wires, and checked the ecu. The ecu is fine and I am still not getting spark. Any suggestions. The car has an aftermarket alarm system on it that just recently started to act up. Is there any posibility that this could be the source. The day before the car would not start I drove 4 hours in the rain, could I have gotten water into a sensor, maybe the CAS? Thank you for your help.

I just bought my first DSM, it's a 1990 Talon TSi AWD.

While checking out all the stuff that will need to be new, I figured that I should check the plugs and wires. Well I pulled the first plug out (far left plug) and it was soaked in oil all over the threads. So kinda irritated I pulled out the other 3 and they were a little fouled but there was no oil on either of them. My question is what is up with the oil all over the first spark plug? Does this mean one of the piston rings is bad? Really I have no idea but need to know since this car needs to be fixed soon because I haven't even got to drive it yet and thats enough to drive someone insane!

If anyone would be nice enough to let me know exactly what the problem could be and what I would need to do to fix it I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks.
