I was driving my 91 1.8 eclipse and it acted funny. I was able to make it home with out much difficulty but when i lifted the hood I saw oil from the valve cover. I believe it is only my gasket that needs replacement. I am going to do it my self. Is there anything I should be aware of or look for???

Just remove the valve cover and be sure to use a good quality gasket. They just leak with time.

is it seeping out around the edges of the valve cover? or sitting on top of the valve cover?

if you assume it's a valve cover gasket, it's very easy. just be sure to tighten the valve cover bolts to spec. they break easily. i know from experience when tightening mine down with a new torque wrench i was unfamiliar with....

just be sure when u change the valve cover gasket the kit has 5 pieces (the 4 spark plug cylinder gaskets as well)

If it was running funny and still runs funny after changing gasket would a cracked valve cover cause a pressure lose and throw off the normal running of engine?

he said its a 1.8 so the valve cover is just one piece the plugs go into the side of the head. and its a very easy thing to change just a couple bolts and your done.

What makes you think the valve cover leaking has anything to do with the car "acting funny"? What do you mean by "acting funny"? Was it misfiring or what?

I was driving it down the highway and it suddenly seemed like it lost power and my revs started slowing down. At that time the temp would start to overheat so I pulled over and shut it off. I popped the hood and the car had oil coming from the sides(today) of valve cover. Nothing big but enough to tell where it was coming from.

the oil seems to be seeping around opposite corners of valve cover

Did you run it low on oil?

no its got more than 3/4 oil according to my dash

I changed the valve cover gasket and when I ran the car. It seems like some smoke is coming from the exhaust manifold but I figured its just the oil that spille from before. As I drove the car, my oil light came on so I pulled over checked to see if any leaks then I put some oil in the car to see.

So after putting a new gasket on... you took off driving on your merry way and the oil light came on?

You may have lost more oil than you thought. Don't rely on that dash guage...I wasn't aware the dash had a guage that told you how much oil is in the car? I thought that was an Oil pressure guage....

Check the dipstick...?

I drove it and it seemed like smoke was coming from the right side of the exhaust manifold. It was not a lot of smoke but enough where I could see it. I figured from all the oil that spilled it was burning it off. But then I saw my dash gauge again started dropping so i looked under the car and it was leaking all the oil.
