This morning my oil started to leak. I jacked up the car and took a look and my oil filter had come loose. My last oil change was awhile ago so it is not that I did the change wrong because everything has been running fine for months. I tightened the filter back up and am currently waiting for the engine to cool before putting some more oil in to see if that is, in fact, the source of the oil leak. Wondering if a random loose oil filter is a common thing I should look further into or am I good to tighten the filter back up and refill the oil if no leaks are detected? I also noticed the entire housing the filter screws into has some rotational play in it. Is this normal? I don't ever remember it doing that before.. I have included a video of the rotation i am talking about.

You need to take the filter back off and tighten the threaded part that the oil filter screws onto. You will be able to put a large socket on the fitting and tighten it up. Doing so should help get everything snugged back up and stop your oil leak. Good luck! :thumb:

I havent had a 4g63 oil filter housing off before, but 90% of them you just take the oil filter off & there is a nut holding the housing down. You can try tightening it, but i would take the nut off, slide the housing off & replace the o-ring or gasket because it may be damaged.

Thanks for the quick replies guys... I will replace the housing gasket, tighten it up, and do an oil change and hopefully everything will check out okay after that.

Don't tighten it too tight or you will crush the oil cooler, allowing coolant and oil to mix. The torque spec. is 40-45 Nm or 29-33 ft. lb. I would also put some thread locker on the threads.
