Is there any reason change the stock 90 oil cooler setup? The only thing I have done to mine is relocate the cooler slightly, it's still in front of the radiator, just had to move it a little to clear the FMIC.

My setup, used the proper way so I never would have an issue with coolant/oil mixing or downpoipe clearance or leaks from sandwich plates (heard of this a lot)....

A couple questions, please. I'll be using a remote Parker Racor screen-type filter and a MaxSpeed Motorsports filter block-off housing and would ideally like to install the filter near top-of-motor level, but I don't want to have to dry-start all the time because oil runs back into the pan from both lines every time the motor is off.

1. Do '90 housings (or any DSM housings) have drain-back check valves that keep the oil in the circuit when the pump's not running?

2. Originally I'd planned to plumb the filter and a cooler into the same circuit off the housing's filter boss. I see that the housings you guys are using presumably have a series circuit internally that pumps oil through the filter and through the cooler inlet and outlet ports. Correct?

3. What is an average length for lines for a setup like the one D_Eclipse9916 has?

4. Is there any concern with external coolers also suffering from "dry start" drain-back, or do they stay filled when the pump's not turning?

Some filters have anti-drainback flaps. Some don't. Oil is formulated to remain in bearings long enough to protect the bearings until pressure (oil pressure is for cooling, not for lubrication) and supply come up to running levels.

So long as there's adequate airflow over the fins you're fine. I'm going to be doing some ducting on the frontend of the car for the radiator, fmic, oil cooler, and ps cooler but I need to get some brake ducts installed firstbefore I move onto that.

So hows the ducting coming?

And does anyone have a answer to my question? Do these setups you guys are installing on your later model cars that didn't come with an oil cooler have any real advantage over the 90's stock cooler setup?

For 99% of us these set ups don't offer any real advantage over the stock set up (90 or newer). My stock cooler was leaking and I got a good deal on the parts so I switched.

oil pressure is for cooling, not for lubrication

How so?
My educated understanding of a hydrodynamic bearing is that oil pressure is used to keep a constant film of oil between the crank journals and the bearing surface so that the jornal never actually touches the bearing surface... This is why it is important for oil pressure to increase with engine speed. And I'm confused how oil pressure is for cooling? If you increase oil pressure you increase the friction, hence you make the oil hotter, not cooler. If you increase the FLOW you decrease the temperature... But you will lose pressure by increasing flow.

I'm not saying your wrong, as there is a good chance that I slept through that day during machine design:boring:

I have a TSi AUTO parts car, and it has the stock side mount tranny cooler in the drivers fender. My question is, can I wash it out and use it as an engine Oil cooler for my TSi AWD?

That will work just fine. You need to make sure and find a way to get it to hook up to your oil cooler.

In my honest opinion, I would get a new oil cooler (earl's plumbing?) and hook that up. Its completely up to you. I just think it would be easier to just get a new setup.

Well I noticed on my 2g the are 2 plugs on the oil filter housing. One is by the Turbo feed line and the other is by the sending unit. Could I screw fittings into those holes where the plugs are?

I understand buying a new kit would be Ideal...But Im trying to save money and do things as Cheap as Possile :)

Plus I have this free AT cooler off the parts car and its in great shape!

A lot has been said here, but I see majority of people going to 1990 OFH. This is just because of the ease of direct bolt-on.

In reality it is better to completely remove the oil filter from there/ Factory Location/. There are several reasons:

- clearance: It is too tight there and too close to the DP, dump tube,IC piping etc.
-oil capacity: If you relocate the filter itself, you could put HUGE - Ford type oil filter with capacity of 1 quart. That means more oil capacity and MUCH more filtering area.
-It is even easier to remove oil filter, remove factory oil cooler/the one with antifreeze/ and then just screw on spin on adapter.

I have all the parts from Perma-cool, if someone needs part#'s, let me know.
Basically you'll need:
spin-on adapter, oil-filter relocation kit and various fittings and Lines.

Jeff99gs, no you cant do that. One of those plugs is filtered oil, the other is not. You 7 bolt guys have 2 options on an oil cooler. The sandwich adapter or buy a 7 bolt external cooler filter housing. I *think* machv sells them.

Thread revival:

So I got a 2g trans cooler as well I just need to know which fitting is the input and which is the output.
As well as with the 1990 OFH which is to come out and which in (or which is unfiltered and which is, and you want unfiltered or filtered oil through the cooler?) NM: apparently a E3 OFH is needed for my 7bolt...

And I read somewhere that I cant find now, that you had to auger out the OFH in order to keep oil psi to the correct psi, is this needed on this theoretical setup?

I could not find it so I figured I would be checking this post anyways so.

But I could not find any definitive information on this trans cooler/oil cooler setup and got one and figured I would see where I could take it.

Hey guys con some one post the parts list for all the fittings from the 90 oil filter housing to the front of the car with -8 or -10 an fittings and where to get a good priced cooler to match ...thanks fellows any comments will be appreciated...:thumb::thumb::D:D

BlcknspoOln did a write up using a 90 OFH on a 2g, but all the components should work fine considering its all for a 90 OFH which is what your after.

Here is the thread.

I however still need any info on my questions.

Would anyone happen to have the Aeroquip number or description for the fittings that thread into the housing for the oil cooler set up?
