Well driving to work today, my oil cooler happened to fall of and one of the lines broke as well (90-stock setup). I noticed the power was gone then the oil pressure, pulled over and the engine shut itself off. So really I am venting here because I want to cry as I was about to switch this POS out with new AN lines and new B&M cooler. What damage can I expect to have from this to the motor?? I am guessing everything just really want to throw up right now. Probably be in the market for a new motor as rebuilding it is going to cost more then buying a used one. FML.

Ouch, sounds like all your oil was gone and you probably spun some bearings. You can try adding some oil and seeing if it will start but i think the damage is already done.

I agree its probably screwed but before you put new oil in, pull you spark plugs and put a 1/2" drive on the crank to see if it will turn freely or not.

I can live if it is just bearings but I guess I need to get it to a shop and have them take a look at everything. Is it likely that the block is alright? How about the head, this is the first time anything like this has ever happened to me. I noticed the turbo housing was glowing, can I expect it to be shot as well?

The block is probably ok however i would assume that your main bearings, rod bearings, piston rings, turbo, mabe crank and head are not feeling so good. like i said earlier, the best thing you can do at this point is to see how much you screwed up by seeing if the engine turns freely by turning the crank clockwise with a 1/2" drive.

thats not good if it shut if self off. it could be seized...

I'm probably going to get flamed for this but I stopped running an oil cooler years ago.

My 92' has not had one for a long time and the 97', I got last year, does not have one after I put the 2.3 in it.

I use a good oil and change at sooner intervals. So far, so good, knock on wood.:D

How long did it run like that? Was there oil everywhere? There is a thermostat-type bypass valve that keep the oil from going to the cooler if it is below 210-215* or so. Not to get your hopes up unnecessarily since the car did cut off which doesn't sound good, but I suppose the valve could have kept the oil in if it was below that temp and working correctly...

It all happened very quickly, I noticed something real quick was not right, power was cut, at that point I went to go pull over, kinda figured it was my fuel pump or something connection came loose IDK. Pulled over as the car seamed to stall, there was never a bad smell or anything or a harsh metal sound. But I got out and took a look under the car to notice that the oil cooler was dragging by one of the lines the other one had broken. I am guessing run length could not have been more then 2 minutes but I am not sure really. It is just so unexpected because the car was running real well and everything was coming together.
