Want to see how some of you guys are routing your catch cans. Please post pics and any problems you encountered with your particular set up hopefully this thread can help me and others with there projects as well........

Also this is my first post/thread so i apologise if this is the wrong area to post this or if its repetative.

:hellyeah:

My current setup. It's technically wrong although it functions properly.

I didn't realize vented catch cans were wrong for DSMs when I ordered it, so I'm running this setup until I get a couple sealed units and check valves to replace it.

Im gonna look into frontline see what they are all about and i like that carbon fiber looking can i was gonna get the sickspeed neo chrome catch can or maybe weapon r but that's just based on looks not functionality any idea if either of here brands are even worth buying?

you guys have some clean installs and some nice cans but how does one can out perform another? is it just capacity or whether its vented or not i literally just got my first dsm today which is a 1997 talon tsi and it has rod bearing issues go figure right ;) but i just want to have a clean and properly built 2g

It's not carbon fiber "looking" it IS carbon fiber, its a mishimoto. That being said a really good catch can will have baffles and or a filter type element of some type, though most catch cans don't, including the name brand ones. But it should at least have the input and output hose positioned such that they are not lined up with each other. I can't speak to either of the two you asked about because I've never bought anything from either company.

how many of you have had to relocate your catch cans, what i mean is have you mounted it and encountered any problems and had to relocate if so what problems were they and things to avoid, having the can lower than the valve cover good or bad or is there no effect on its functionality also does the length of hoses matter or just hook it up and go........

Nothing wrong with your setup, it's more of a prefference. Pressure still gets released from the crank case, you just dont have vacuum helping pull fumes while crusing. The stock set up is more for emissions purposes. As long as your engine is healthy to begin with and you do frequent oil changes you have nothing to worry about. Your set up is preffered more for racing then for a daily driver. I run the same set up and have never had issues.

So whats the deal with vented catch cans being wrong?

Vented catch cans with no PCV do not scavenge any of the blowby gasses out of the crankcase. They just build up and become concentrated in there. The reason that's bad is those gasses contain moisture and other corrosive agents.

I have mine mounted at the highest point in the engine bay, this seems to keep most of the oil in the engine, and all of the oil out of my intake that way.

I will do the same since i will relocate my battery so i will have tons of room
thanks colt for the help and explanation on the vented cans.

If you want to know why a vented pcv setup is wrong read this. http://http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-engine-fuel/366890-4g63t-pcv-system.html

If you are running a drag car, a vented setup is fine, but for normal driving you need vacuum to pull the vapors out of the head. A race car is almost always wide open and pushing vapors out, but idling lets them build up, hence the need for a vacuum source.

Calan also sells some nice catch cans so check them out. Paul uses one and has pics of it here http://http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/custom-fabrication/372279-my-new-crankcase-evacuation-system.html

Ok cool thanks for the info i will read up i want the healthiest running car possible with more engine than turbo (more engine upgrades than turbo upgrades)

also wondering if you could steer me towards this displacement chart i saw with displacements for different mm cranks any help would be nice thanks

sorry, off topic, Nocturnal, why does your valve cover say hyundai?

Because Hyundai is were it's at if you want to make power:shhh:

Some of them are interchangeable. or he is running a Hyundai motor. they share alot of the 2.0L parts but i think they are a 2.2/2.3L

Mine is from an 1.8 Elantra 4g67 I believe, the 1.6l are similar too, not sure about the 2.2/2.3 thing.

Just PM me with any questions guys, thanks.

So i found a catch can i want and its solely on looks i believe it to be hollow can i run a hose to the bottom and create my own baffle I've seen people use stainless steel pot scrubbers but that seems sketchy any ideas on creating a baffle

IMO, the problem with the stock PCV system is the PCV valve itself. It has to close under boost to prevent intake pressure from filling the crank case. But that means under boost, when you likely have the most amount of blow-by, your PCV system's ability to vent pressure has been cut in half. So I simply ran two lines to an eBay catch can (not the best, but sill functions) and one line to a low pressure source right before the turbo. This allows the CC to constantly vent through both valve cover ports. Here's my setup. It might be hard to see, but there's one clear hose running from the can to the metal inlet pipe before the turbo.

This is the "maximum pressure relief" setup described in Calan's PCV thread.

I'm going off topic here but he is right from 91 to 93 the Hyundai elantra used the G4CS 1.8l engine from Mitsubishi also known as 4g67 it shares many parts like the valve cover, PCV, timing belt harmonic balancer etc you get Mitsubishi OEM but much cheaper... altermators too I'm using one.
Now back to topic I would stick with OE PCV setup unless big power is made BUT I agree with WES too anything bigger than stock turbo is better a full pressure release setup.

I built mine with the VC side pipe plumbed to the bottom of my catch can, and there's shelves in there with a SS lint trap in between the two shelves. I guess it's similar to the pot scrubber thing.

It's a lint trap for a clothes washer drain hose. They sell them in the grocery store.
