Oil catch can, Help needed.

Alright, I've got this Greddy catch can. I also have a FP 4" intake without the nipples on the intake pipe. My question is. Do I take the valve cover line into one port, then do I install a barb valve cover and then block it off, and then take another line from the other nipple on the catch can, install the PCV valve in to the line and plug it back in to the intake manifold?

Ok... I'm trying to come up with a VC catch can design that uses beer vapors to optimize AFR... I'll post updates as I get some results....

Sorry... just figured I should mention something on topic so our thread doesn't get locked by the forum "gods"... oh wait... there is a moderator in this discussion... we're good to go! :p

Seriously... I wanna play around with this whole thing if I ever get my car back together. I'm curious as to how the stuff we've been discussing could potentially affect things. Probably not at all... but I'm an engineer and by nature.. an inquisitive type. And I take Bruce's earlier comment about be me being as anal as him as quite the compliment ;)

And... "screw you guys... I'm going home..." :D

I made a catch can and now I think I am going to have to redesign it a little bit. I had a breather filter on the top but now I should have it sealed.

I have one catch can already made from PVC material. It has three hose connections, It sounds like I should cap one off!

So making sure because the MAF-T came into this discussion...
What you guys are talking about is metered air making its way passed the MAS undetected...
I am building a computer from MegaSquirt that uses a MAP to meter pressure,
If I build it so like the way it was origionaly designed:

vc->catch can->intake

and

vc-> PCV-> catch can -> heavy duty check valve -> intake

it still would work...
Just checking if I have any unforseeable problems!!!:D

If I had to put a bigger catch can (because I made it already and I don't want to waste it) it should go on the breather side of the valve cover right? that would have the most oil instead of the PCV valve I am thinking. I am going to buy one of those husky air filters for that,

However where do I find one of those heavy duty check valves?

Hey I was just thinking about what to do with the MAF-T situation...

I was thinking what if you hooked up the PCV valve side to the intake snorkel where the VC breather usually hooks to...

This would create vacuum for the PCV side but yet not letting in any un metered air because it would have to pass through the GM Maf, however you would need a filter or a catch can to make sure no oil would get through and damage the sensor

Then you could have a filter on the side of the VC breather becaue it would be constanly sucking in fresh air....

This wouldn't be a constant vacuum as much as the IM but it is better then letting it breath to the atmosphere i think... maybe


I was just thinking about this because my gs always has vaccume for the PCV valve because it never sees boost and always has vacuum

However my gs doesn't see boost and I am sure there is a problem with this solution somewhere but putting it out to see what you people thing..:)

I like the thought process, but remember the GM MAF is located up by the TB. So, if you hooked up the PCV to the intake snorkel (read: before MAF) you would venting/vacuuming metered air.

Basically it'd be the same problem only backwards. Although, without thinking about it too much, you'd eliminate the need to have an aftermarket check valve in place. I think the best answer to this is to simply hook up the PCV valve hose like normal along with the VC breather hose pre-turbo and then just deal with the A/F ratio with tuning.
 
It won't work because there will be no ventilation in close loop, remember ventilation comes first, slight change in AFR is only secondary.

No you wouldn't be vacuuming metered air. It would be unmetered air, it wouldn't be clean air because it is coming from the crank case and that would throw your tune off I think. Adding the catch can would only take out the liquid...

The reason is the PCV valve would be getting the vacuum that the turbo makes before air goes into the turbo. The gm MAF measure air going into the engine after the turbo so the vacuum would be unmetered. It would only be metered if it was after the sensor right? You would cap the Intake manifold point off so no umetered air would go into or metered air flow out of.

The breather side of the VC would have just a filter (or a catch can) that is to the atmosphere...

This may not work the best but it is better then venting both sides of the VC to the atmosphere...

The only thing that I think would be a problem would be that air would be only flowing out of the PCV and always in the VC vent... But thats how my Non turbo car works isn't it?
The PCV vavle never shuts because there is always vacuum there, no boost.. so it flows only one way...
 
Maybe I have this backwards....
Lets see if I have this right...
Doesn't the PCV valve shut when there is boost in the intake manifold? The reason is that you don't want positive pressure in the crank case. It would blow out your dip stick plus the engine is creating positive pressure anyway.
So doesn't it open at idle when there is vacuum in the intake manifold and shut when there is boost? When boost kicks in, the PCV valve shuts and then engine depends on the breather on the side of the VC to remove excess pressure. How it does that is the Breather is hooked up to the intake

So on a non turbo where there is never boost, there is always some kind of vacuum in the intake manifold, unless the pressure drops to zero at WOT but I still think the engine is creating vacuum because it is still sucking in air for the engine.

*I think I am figuring out this part wrong... When it is at WOT, vacuum drops right? Even on a non turbo car... So the vacuume would be stronger on the Breather side of the vc which is attached to the intake pipe that leads to the intake manifold.*

So would air still be sucked out of that PCV Valve at WOT on a N/T? On my non turbo GS, it is set up the same way as my turbo car, there is a PCV valve there, and there is the side VC breather that is hooked up to the intake pipe by the air filter.
