Oil and clutch material in bell housing (need help)

Today I found oil and clutch fibers inside the bellhousing when I dropped my transmission. I wanted to know how I should go about the problem. The tranny fluid was never low and the flywheel isn't soaked in oil so i'm leaning away from it being the rear main seal. If someone could help me out it would be great.

1) I know I need a new clutch
2) Need to determine if it is my rear main seal or tranny seal. (i can't really tell)

ps. There was a hole in the lip of my oil pan also. I was trying to figure out if this oil is what was flying upwards into my clutch through the viewing plate. If I can I will post up pictures.

So long as you have gear oil in your trans, take some of the oil onto your finger and smell it. If it smells like sulfur, it's gear oil, and it's coming from the trans input shaft. If not, it's most likely engine oil coming form the rear main seal. Most likely the oil wasn't flying up through the little inspection cover, it's probably coming from within.

If you are unsure when the rear main seal was last changed, change it anyways, it will save you some headache later on and you will know that it is not the cause of your problem.

I will change the rear main reguardless. How hard it it to change the trans input shaft seal?
