Heres a good thread on the differences between the two so you get an idea of what needs to be changed.

But I believe you would need a CAS, Flywheel and Clutch for a 6 bolt, some head work if your going to keep the 7 bolt head. Thats about it though and a tuning program to flip the cam sensor signal if need be for your car.
 
since 1g 6/7 bolts are the same block(?) correct me if I'm wrong, can I just swap a 6 bolt crank/flywheel/clutch combo and the rest stated above as long as the block is not damaged, or am I just going to be looking for another block.
 
If your motor has a crankshaft and a thrust bearing then it can suffer from crankwalk, it's not just a 7-bolt thing and its not just a DSM thing.

That's like saying that just because a small amount of men get breast cancer, it's not a women's health issue. It is a very legitimate complaint that the early 7 bolt dsm's have a higher chance of crankwalk than a gm ecotec. Crankwalk is as much a concern with 2g dsm's as door handles falling off, and bad ball joints.
 
sorry to bring this back but I still have a significant amount of end-play for the crank (hasn't walked yet) is there a chance I can catch it now and throw in some ACL bearings and have the crank checked for damage and if everything checks out just stock build it? I have no plans on going past 20 lbs of boost at all once its rebuilt.
 
Talking about bringing it back LOL. Are you still running the same motor that you were experiencing the "crank walk" symptoms with?
 
I like King bearings. I have been using them in both 6 bolt and 7 bolt with out issue.

93AWDDSM, When you pull the main bearings out, check the thrust face of the crank.

If it feels stepped, or rough, new bearings will last a short time, depending on how bad the thrust face is.

If it is rough at all, it will just chew through the new bearing.

question though, if the crank is trashed would that mean the block would also be unusable with a new crank?
