Guys,

Ran a search but for some reason, the search function for this site is next to useless. Why it can't decipher the words I put in is beyond me.

Anyway, I need to know if there is anywhere to buy a rattle can OEM paint. I have some door handles (which are only made in black from Mitsubishi) which need to be resprayed to match my body color.

Anyone have any tips? I'm just trying to save a trip to a body shop. Thanks.

I would not rattle can it.

You can get a paint code and have a local shop do it for cheap.

Well, I mean, if they make an OEM paint in a rattle can the results can be just as grand as a paint shop. After all, it is all in the prep work. There isn't hardly any work in painting the door handle. It would require a sanding, few layers of paint, a wet sand, then a buff. There. Done.
I have all of the supplies to do it here. Like I said, I'm just trying to avoid a paint shop if it's possible to find the color.

In my old gs I painted my door handle an autozone silver that looked like it matched, came out great.

bastarddsm had a point about the urethane and durability of a rattle can product, so I just brought it to a local place. It should actually be finished tomorrow.

Thanks a lot, guys. :thumb:

Well first if you have a the plastic repair handles. Spray it first with a primer, 2 coats should do. Sand it from 320 to 500. Next spray the first coat of paint, 2 coats should do. If there is any runs in the paint, sand it with 800 and spray it again to get a nice even form. Last spray your clear coat.

generally all you can get is an enamel ina rattel can.. it has basically no durability. you need a urethane. you *should* be able to get them sprayed at a body shop for under 100 dollars.
MOST rattle cans aren't Enamel, they're Lacquer. What that means is that any paint you'd spray over it from now on out stand a chance of lifting unless the Lacquer is completely stripped off.

Another thing that sucks is the companies like Dupli-Color that make these "factory touch-up" rattle cans don't even cover 25% of the colors that were sprayed on any vehicle in a given year. All they're doing is picking the most common colors and making those. Take 2003 GM colors for example....Dupli-Color is showing 11 colors available in their touch-up line; PPG is showing 44 in passenger cars and 28 in trucks.

If you want the proper finish, go to an auto store that sells paint supplies and have them either mix paint and add it to a spray can, or buy a PreVal spray gun (Preval Spray Gun - Home) to do the job with the paint and hardener they give you. All urethanes have a shelf life so once they're mixed with an activator they must be used right away....hence the reason Dupli-Color doesn't make urethane touch-up paints.

Thanks for most of these answers. I figured someone HAD to make a rattle can with our OEM colors and it was simply a paint comparable to factory which would be fine to use on door handles, but I am coming to learn that it's not that easy.

I brought the replacement door handle to a body shop to get sprayed. It'll actually be ready tomorrow- much faster than I could have done.

Thanks for the replies and knowledge (which I hope shows up in the search function). :thumb:

Go to the biggest shop in your town that supplies automotive paint. They'll have a scanner that'll match your color, and be able to put some in a spray can for you. Maybe twenty bucks.

I had a couple cans made from a local place to match my cars paint code - cost $13 per can.

I bought a can of color from my local Dodge dealer for my new handles. Cheap and an exact match.
