I recently completed the awd swap on my mirage and I am having some problems shifting into 2nd and 4th quickly. If I launch the car and try to shift quickly into 2nd it won't go into gear, but if I hold the clutch down a little longer I hear the cable go clunk into gear. It's the same thing with 3rd into 4th, wot shifting into 4th I have to wait a second to hear it go into gear and then let the clutch out.
I'm using a 92 transmission, bracket, cables, and shifter base. I have brass bushings on the cable ends and the shifter base bushings were replaced with washers so it doesn't move at all. The cables are adjusted correctly and the shifter is in good shape (no play).
The only thing I can think of is the engine roll is too much and causing the shifts to miss. But I can shift very quickly from 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 5th. I've also noticed when messing around with the adjustment that when I shift into 2nd it doesn't have the fully engaged feeling even when I adjust the cable out more. If that makes sense to you, sorta hard to explain.
Any ideas on what it could be other the excess engine movement? I'm sort of out of ideas.
Well it was a really simple easy fix. Sorta feel foolish but o well.
The shifter boot was binding on the cable which I believe was a little bent and apparently caused it to break like that. Couldn't see it was broken until I removed the cables. I just took it for a test drive and shifting is perfect again. So anyone with similar problems check your cables!
