So im trying to up my octane. the highest octane that anywhere within an hour drive is 91 octane. im runnin 20 psi on my evo 3 with suporting mods, i have a wideband and its in optimal. i was woundering if i can still use octane boosters to help prevent knock and make the car run better.

Yes, if you can afford it. The NOS octane booster actually give a decent increase. I would say at least a 1 point to 1 1/2 point per 16 gallon's of 91. It will make a solid 92, and is safe to use with sensor's and cat's.

Don't bother. They don't raise your octane levels enough to make any sort of difference unless there's some magical product I don't know about.

Have you looked into toluene yet? You can get it all over the place. Google it.

Meth injection is the only effective, affordable solution.

This ^.

Or switch to E85.

I should have looked at his location. As far as i know theres tons of E85 available in CO. OP would be crazy to burn anything else IMO.

There are plenty of e85 stations, one done my block but i do know i have fuel upgrade but i dont know what exactly. i dont wana put e85 because ive been told by people of this site that i need at least 700cc injectors to run e85 and a special tune

900cc minimum is more like it. 9 something... that and you would need to use dsmlink and use a different tune... upgrade your fuel system as well. I am avoiding e85 because I don't have an eprom ecru and don't want to spend 600 bones for an ecu+dsmlink

though so. there is a performance shop that sells 118 octane for 12 bucks a gallon ide rather use.

wow 12 bucks?

I can get 117 octane for less than 8.50 WTF

But i do live less than 5 miles from the Sebring International Raceway :hellyeah:

Octane booster is a waste of money. The true octane booster is meth, higher octane fuel, or mixing unleaded race fuel with regular fuel

Did research on this NOS octane booster, it drops ## horsepower by 2%. lowers not gains, also found out that gas station octane boosters also drop ## horsepower by 2%, please tell me this isnt true.

Less power with the same ignition map. The additional detonation supression of higher octane fuel allows for more timing to be added and/or higher compression which in turn allows for more power to be made. But to answer your question in its simplest form: yes, 87 will burn faster and make more power until you start running into knock counts. Im not a fuel expert but im sure there are some great threads here if you want more info.

Ive used Toulene before gives a nice kick. I work at a MRO for aircraft and we keep hundreds of 8oz. bottles of the stuff. In the winter would throw in 2 or 3 bottles when filling up the tank. We have a winter blend here that sucks so the extra kick gave it some of its life back.

I used to be addicted to octane booster just hoping it was helping even a bit, and difference was minimal, if any. Definitely waste of money. I might suggest one alternative for you which would be using Water-Meth injection system. It is somewhat of a steep investment, but it works so well.
Ultimately I converted to full E-85, so that's another alternative for you as well. We also had nothing else but crappy 91 octane around.

Just my opinion, hope you consider it.

:)

Didn't read teh thread too much, but just put in a few gallons of E85 if you can to up the octane for the price of the booster you can just add 2 gallons of E85 and it will do the job.

Good luck, hope i helped and that you do have access to E85 its awesome stuff.

None of these are going to make a difference with-out a way to Tune to use the extra Octane of them or a way to adjust for the difference in fueling...

If you have some issue an are knocking the extra octane will likely help with it... But yeah.

not to jack your thread but i feel this is appropriate - i live in Mountain Home, ID.. about 45 mins SE of Boise and about an hour NE of Twin Falls, ID. I don't have access to E85 or race fuel anywhere near here.. Boise is approx 45 mins away and thats where the race fuel and E85 is. but for best effect on raising the octane (especially in a daily driver that would see the track every 2 to 3 weeks)?
E85? Race gas? or meth injection?
E85 would be the cheapest but would i be able to get away with mixing it in with 91oct and not having to mess with my tune at all which is tuned to be a bit richer at 22psi?

figured some of the answers to this would be good info for this thread also since i have nothing else but 91oct around.

Honestly If you were running more then 22psi I'd say, Move to Boise or Buy it by the drum an run Strait e85. Seem like the best option to me...

Otherwise is there somewhere to buy Methanol localy? That would be your next best bet.

But, honestly I'm not a fan of Meth injection... To many things to go wrong. Others will probably say different But, if it's your only option that maybe a better one based solely on availability...

Again I only say if you were running more 22psi since above that your going to be actually able to run more timing advance then pump at higher PSI an see some kind of gains unless you have been buying Really piss poor 91...
