Leamington,
hey i was looking at some fuel injector cleaners the other day and i saw this nos octane booster street formula...is that any good??? and how much affect does it do...and is it bad for any parts of the motor??WTF

Octane boosters are a joke, 6-10 points of octane which translates to acutally .6-1 octane better fuel, save your money and buy a gallon of race gas.

hheeuuWTF ?? i dont know what that means..boost points...?? and what about the racing formula??

do any of you know the size of the 1G steering wheel by any chance? :)

the nos race formula boost the octane by 6 points there for 91 (in colorado) is 97 and 93 octance is 99. ive used it and i can deffinitly tell a difference and it wont harm ## engine.

NOS, Torco, NX and VP are the only ones that work. I've used the NOS race formula before and I can verify that it makes a huge difference in knock counts.

I have called NOS( made by permatex) and they told me that it actually raises the octane level by 6 full points( race formula) so with 94 you get 100..

Actually by points they mean 0.6, so you would have 94.6 octane. Now if they could go from 94-100 with their little bottle, that would be pretty amazing...

Exactly ^^^. 6 points of octane translates to about .6 octane level raised. So that would take 93 octane (FL) and put it at roughly 93.6, nothing amazing. If you think about it this way, why would anyone buy 93 octane if they could buy the NOS octane booster and raise the gas by 6 points? Just spend the 20 cents per gallon less and buy the 87, then add the 6-9 dollar bottle of octane booster and you just made 16 gallons of gas that much better with 6 bucks... It doesnt work that way, and either way its not going to feel to much different, some but not that much, can you really tell a huge difference between 87 and 93? There is a slight difference but nothing special so why would 93-100 be any different?

Yes, 6 full POINTS. When they tell you they make a product that will raise your octane by 6 octanes - BUY IT (and no, no one makes this).

On the bottle, the race forumla says 60 points, NOT 6 points. 93 becomes 99.

Everybody get it?

So then it would be safe to say that the cars, such as BMW's, that say to run on 93 octane only could buy 87 octane pump gas, add the octane booster and they would be running on 93? Could you put 2 bottles in your gas and then be running on 105? I would be skeptical that it works as well as they say, I am not saying it does not, I am saying that I have never seen proof that the octane booster actually boosts the octane level by 6 octanes. I know a lot of people that have used that and it actually made the car run slower down the track than previous attempts, and this is with almost identical 60 foot times so the launch was the same on both cases. This means that somewhere after the 60 foot mark the car was slower than running off of regular gas. And this is not a single case I am talking about, I would say I know about six or seven people that have done this with similar results. I would say just dont depend on that stuff and run race gas if you want higher octanes.

Really?

Keep in mind that you guys that haven't used this are passing around bad information. This is NOT the same product as the "non-working" boosters that raise octane by .6 numbers. If anyone else would like to disagree, I'd be happy to go buy a can at my local Autozone and scan the text on the box for you.

Just in case you still don't get it:

I've used both of these personally so if anyone else want to dispute whether these two products work, let's have at it

Cheers,

Andy

If you add octane in the absence of knock, you richen up the A/F ratio and naturally slow the car down. Running high octane should be dictated as a defense against knock or as a method to allow for high timing and high boost. Adding more to a setup that doesn't need it is a waste of time and will hurt performance more than help it.

Ok thanks for the information. Not that I would ever use that stuff anyways, I would just go with race gas in the future when i get to the point where i would need to use something like that.

Not trying to start an arugment with a wiseman here, so don't get me wrong.

NOS has a street formula, a racing formula and an off-road formula. The street one boosts octane by 3 POINTS (not octanes), the race one boosts octane by 7 POINTS (not octane). Which NOS octane booster bottle states that it increases octane by 7 octanes? We all know octanes have points, and if the bottle does increase boost octane by 7 octanes then why doesn't it state that in the link above?

The only product that boosts octane from 93 octane to 104 is the link you provided above and notice that they are not sold as "Octane Boosters". :sneaky:

:rocks: Hey Andy!

I too have used some additives and noticed a gain.

There are products out there that do not do as much, make sure you READ the entire description.

I also do not recommend stop and go, low boost city driving on Octane Boosted fuel, it burns "slower" and could "glaze the plugs".

It should be added like stated above to combat detonation at higher boost levels and when more timing is added.

Normally when I would add the octane stuff, I would crank the boost 2-3 more psi and use that tank of fuel THAT NIGHT, then back to straight up premium (91 octane here:notgood: )

Good point. Could you please elaborate on this?

I had success using Torco Octane Booster.

For something really that works (other than buying 100 Octane), I used Toluene or Xylene on track days. Added that to sorry 91 Octane Cali gas, and you come up with something decent.

Guys, I know that no ones trying to start a war here but as I mentioned, I've tried the NOS product (Racing) and it does what it's supposed to. On the box itself, it actually mentions an increase of 5-6 whole octane numbers. If you want me to pick up a can this weekend and photograph the label, I'd be happy to. They even mention the difference between raising whole octane numbers as opposed to points to avoid comparsions with the inferior brand names.

Now granted the Torco product is in an entirely different league and while it's not marketed as an octane booster, I ran a 12.57 pass on the 2.0 with stock cams and a Big 16G on it. Did it work as well as race fuel? Absolutely not since 104 unleaded doesn't compare well to 110 leaded although the knock reduction and ability to support higher boost and timing is there. At 24psi and 22 degrees of advance on an 11.7:1 A/F, I still saw close to 5 counts of knock. On similar race fuel passes, I wouldn't see any although I never had a chance to run the car at the track on both fuels to see which was faster.

Interestingly enough, Kelly (gxtacy) makes an important point. I've used this tank after tank and you should see the valves now that the motor's in pieces. The level of buildup from the additives is insane. Run it for one night at the track and then re-fill wth pump gas if you need to. I've mentioned this before in other threads, but if you start developing misfires on this stuff at high RPM's, it's time to change your plugs since they load up with additives very quickly.

I'll put it this way though. If you want something that works to get rid of some borderline knock, go ahead and try the NOS Race Formula. If you need something really potent, definitely spring for the Torco or run straight race gas.

Cheers,

Andy

i personally think that those things are junk. if i want my octane boosted i'll just add some 110 race fuel to my tank.... and i know for sure that the octane should spike there and it always smells good. :D
