I still haven't been able to figure out what I need to fix/replace to get rid of this code, P0446 - EVAP Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction.

I have temporary plates on the car that expire soon. I need to get it inspected before I register it... I tried clearing the code, but it comes back after about 15 minutes of driving.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sean

now have if you installed an aftermarket intake if so go over your intake installation, make sure you installed everything correctly, the clamps are tight, and the MAF sensor is in correctly. Once you're sure of that, reset your ECU by disconnecting your battery for 10 minutes

That makes me feel better. The only mods done to the car are the intake. It's one of those Enjen intakes + filter. I will go over everything to the best of my knowledge... but that isn't much, LOL. I am about to go in the garage right now and check all the fittings/hoses, and clean the air filter because it is filthy (previous owner)

Anything in particular I should look for?

Also, a friend who has a 92 gsx came over last week and did some test on the stock blow-off valve. He disconnected the hose, pluged it with his palm, then boosted up the engine to where I could feel the stock, old (92K mile) blow-off valve leaking boost when you rev the engine. Could that be throwing this code?

It's sounds to me like you have a malfunctioning EVAP purge valve or even a bad TVV. I wouldn't even know where to begin to test those, other than replacing them altogether.

What kind of car is this on? You should fill out your profile so we better diagnose your problems.

If this is a 2G turbo DSM, the stock BOV is known to leak above certain boost levels (about 8 psi).

I don't think the boost has been turned up. There is no manual or electronic add-ons for that. It is a 2G turbo, how much boost do they have stock? Also, does anyone know how much boost you are getting then the stock gauge hits the + sign? Mine doesn't quite hit it, just below it on WOT....

I think I am going to replace the malfunctioning EVAP purge valve, or that TVV thing. But what are they and where do i find them? price? LOL thanks.

* update - i unplugged the EGR plug by the intake manifold. the car now gives me the P0403 code - EGR control circuit - i will be plugging that back in...

Also, when I clear the P0446 code, it comes right back immediately after you clear it....

The stock guage is almost completely worthless. Go buy an aftermarket one and then you'll know how much it is really boosting. Also stock boost is around 12lbs.

P0446 diagnosis---Key on engine off. Check battery voltage between the 2 wires that go to the vent solenoid. Then check resistance of the solenoid itself, should be 17-21 ohms. If both these check ok replace the ECM.

Where do I find this vent solenoid you speak of? Replace the ECM? uh where can I find one online... cheap LOL

* I checked my Chilton manual and it says 33 - 44 ohms is normal on 2.0 turbo motors.....

.... Holy Shit.... LOL.... well not really funny.... ok maybe a little.....aw i'm goin crazy....

.... lets just say.... "I'M MISSIN THE YELLOW ARROW!!!!" This is someone else's diagram:

Here is my car's picture taken 30 secs ago:

Please tell me that my 98 gsx has this solenoid mounted somewhere else....

... but since I have a bad feeling about this, how would one go about adding this nifty little feature to his car... LOL sorry have to laugh at this one

And to top that off... I have this HoRrIbLe skwaking sound for about 1.2 seconds EVERY time I start the car. Comes from somewhere around the intake manifold I think... Then I found this post:
http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=158464&highlight=purge+solenoid

I'm guessing this person was getting the P0446 code - plus the same weird sound - ended up being his ECU... the post ^^ mentions ECU...

... man this is getting ugly.

So I went looking around the engine compartment to see what else I could find, and I'm probably just wishful thinking here... but could it be located here on my car?:

So I'm issing the hose that goes to "P" right after the TB.

Does this missing hose give me any insight on my problem?

thanks,

That's the hose the goes to the EVAP purge valve, and subsequently the charcoal canister itself. If you're lacking that hose, and the EVAP solenoid, it's likely that someone removed the whole EVAP system.

You'll need to get a new EVAP system from a junkyard soon, if you're planning on getting the car inspected. Start with the hose from the "P" port, and take everything that's connected to.

Where can I find the charcoal canister to verify if I have that? Also, what cars can I use for parts? Is it only 2g turbo motors, or others? Thanks!

Yea so solution to the problem is....

my car didn't come with it. neither did my friends GST :notgood:

well they either didn't come with it, or it is located somewhere completely different. I still have the code showing, but I got a fake inspection sticker today so I guess i will just quit worrying about it

weird huh?

I am having the exact same problem!!!!!! At first I thought it was because someone had pulled all the emissions vac lines. I plugged them back up, and still the check engine light comes on! I also could not find the EVAP solenoid, and also didn't have anything connect the the P on the throttle body.

I think the thing you were pointing to is the EVAP, you can follow the hoses from it and it takes you straight to the TB, the one that comes straight up in front of the P.

I have a manual transmission. I would assume that is the EVAP also. Do you get the P0446 code? Is that your only one? I get that code plus the code for the idle speed controller, but reason I ask you is because my check engine light doesn't come on.

I will probably wait a while to change out the EVAP solenoid, but I am going to get a new ISC/IAC as soon as possible.

Now that the car has inspection, I just got it registered in my name this morning. :thumb:

:dsm: TIME FOR FMIC, GM MAF, & THE 16G!! :dsm:

didn't want to start a new thread so I'll post in this one. I'm having the same problem and I checked the ohms on the solenoid and it didn't read any resistance, basically it read .000001. is that normal? My manual says 36-44 ohms but is that the service limit or what it should read always?
