Symptoms:

1. My 97 AWD MTX won't go into reverse any more. At first it was intermittent, now it just refuses, whether the engine is running or not. It doesn't clunk or grind when trying to put it in reverse, it's like something is blocking it.

2. Clutch pedal feel is soft in its early travel, but feels normal as you push the pedal in farther. This seems to stay soft even after warming up.

3. When the car is cold, the clutch engages right off the floor. After driving around a while, it seems better.

I've had the slave cylinder replaced and the fluid topped off ( which I assume means the shop didn't bleed it ).

Any ideas? Thanks!

Sorry, mtx = manual transmission. :)

I haven't adjusted the clutch yet or bled the system. Would those be the first things to try?

Thanks

I had similar issues with engagement, specifically in reverse, and adjusting the clutch engagement point helped a great deal. There's an article towards the bottom of RRE's flywheel info page that should help if you don't know how to adjust the travel:

Also, make sure that no part of your shifter linkage is bound up or making contact with any intercooler pipes. It's a goofy thing to check, but it only takes a minute to be sure.

Hope that helps,

Andy
