I'm going to look at a tranny sometime during this week. The guy claims it has 20k miles on it and it's OEM but for a 1g. My car is a 91 AWD.
I've checked Vfaq, and searched on here but everything I found was tranny fitment discussing N/T or the wrong year or cables fitting.

Will a 91-94 AWD Tranny fit in my 91 AWD disregarding 6 or 7 bolt WITHOUT any modification?

If someone could shoot me a link that would be cool.
Thanks.

edit: I'm pretty sure 91-94 have 23 splines, correct?

if the spline counts are different, you simply need a transfer case that is the same spline count as the new tranny.

Look on the tranny, just under where the vent tube would be, in front of the CAS on the valve cover(but on the tranny) and you will see a code.

it should be W5M33. If its an F instead of a W, thats a fwd. If its not an M its not a manual tranny. And if its a 31 instead of a 33, its a weaker Galant GSX(n/t) tranny and will have the wrong gear ratio in the center diff, and as such cannot be used without the corresponding rear diff ratio.

Make sure the shifter bolts, brackets etc also look like they will line up.

Look for cracks in the bellhousing, and especially pay attention to the smaller ear on the front near where the slave cylinder bolts up. Its sort of common for this to get broken, and it causes all sorts of issues when it does.

Thanks. I'll check both of those spots.

The only thing you need to worry about is if it came out of a '90. '90 used a 22 spline output shaft for the T-case and 91-94 used a 23 spline. Shoot, you can even put a 95-96 trans in there also because they have a 23 spline shaft also. 97-99 will bolt up and the spline count is the same, but the final drive ratio is different from 95-96 models. So you would need to make sure and pick up the 97-99 t-case that has the correct ratio to compensate for the difference inside the trans.

If it comes out of a '90 you have a few options.

Use the '90 22 spline output shaft and get a '90 22 spline T-case.

Or

Swap in the '91-94 output shaft and use your stock T-case.

If it is indeed a '90 trans then you will have to use your bracketry for the cables. And use the '91-94 upper shift lever.

This helps WAY more than anything else I've read.
