I had my evo 16g rigged up with pvc pipe an ran 10 psi for 1 month without any problems (mbc bypassed, hose straight from boost source to wastegate)

Recently I recieved a J-pipe to replace the PVC, except I couldn't hook up a boost source to the wastegate this time, so I ran with a fully closed wastegate for a day..

I thought if I kept a close eye on my boost gauge and didn't go too high I'd be ok, though I couple times I may have gone too high becasue I heard my stock 2G BOV squeeling before I let off the throttle, which I didn't think too much off..

The turbo is now very loud spooling, and I get no boost.. There is no side-to-side shaft play, and the compressor wheel spins freely without scraping

Could this be a symptom of a boost leak? (I am running an entirely stock intake setup, hoses and all) Is there a chance I overspooled the turbo and F'd something else up?

For now I have disconnected the wastegate actuator(now fully open) until I can tap in a boost source nipple. I might even take the turbo off to inspect for damages to the turbo shaft or turbine wheel.

Definitely sounds like a big boost leak. Do a simple boost leak check and you'll probably find your problem.

Had the exact same problem when I had a boost leak in my intercooler to intake pipe.

i will do a boost leak test, and repost back.. damn I hope your right

Nothing to get too worried about, should be an easy to fix problem. We've all experienced our share of boost leaks.

update: applied pressure to the turbo inlet, got small amount of air leaking from BOV and crankcase hose (I know the BOV leaks so I stuck a shot glass in there and sealed it off) I also put my thumb over the crankcase hose.

This time I heard bubbling from either the turbo or engine or both, and when I took the oil cap off it went whoosh. Lots of pressure in there. Is there a way to narrow this down any further?

I should mention that during the install, I replaced the O-ring that separates the compressor housing from the turbo oil housing, with a similar one I found at part source tho maybe a bit smaller in thickness, though it seemed to hold fine at 10 psi for the first month. Maybe some boost is getting past the o-ring and bubbling up into the engine?

update: I tested from the turbo inlet to the TB elbow (I capped the intercooler hose just before the TB) and it seems to hold pressure with only a tiny hiss from somewhere. (no bubbling or major loss = o-ring good?)

Then I tested from the TB onward and more hissing by the intake mani and pressure under the oil cap.. I probably need to turn the engine to close the vales correct? Didn't hear bubbling this time, wtf...

so far just small hissing and pressure in the crankcase is this normal? Im looking for something major like I get no boost at all maybe 1 psi...

maybe time to inpect the turbine wheel, or at least fix my smaller boost leaks, one by one

Small boost leaks add up, but not normally to zero boost. Check your WG flapper to see if it is holding. Mine used to fall off because I lost the cotter pin that keeps it on.

I use soapy water to find small leaks, bubbles up real big and you can see it easily.

Ya the soap water trick works so well, espeshialy in the small hard to feel areas... I would Recomend doing this and check back with us!

I know it may be unlikely since you didn't mess with the exhaust components but don't rule out exhaust leaks. If you have a bad exhaust gasket pre turbo (especially the manifold to turbo gasket), or a bad crack it could make a loud turbo like hissing sound and cause your turbo to not boost. After you do the boost leak test and take care of any leaks, if it's still giving you a problem, I'd look there.

UPDATE:> Ok forget boost leaks entirely.. today I was limping my car to a friends garage to do some boost leak testing and I had lots of blue smoke coming out the tailpipe and oil on the exhaust tip.

I dropped the turbo and found the turbine wheel had been scraping the sides of the turbine housing, with oil seeping around into the exhaust stream.

Does this mean my shaft seal is blown? If so can I fix/replace the seal and get this thing back together?

Here is some pics. thanks again for all your help with this

Guess I have this case resolved.. I noticed I'm missing the "sealing ring" as described here in the 16G rebuild VFAQ Turbo Rebuild

My only question now is where can I find a 16G rebuild kit?.. or at least a new sealing ring. Thanks again
