No air filter. Bad idea?

Hey guys,
I'm sorry ahead of time for the silly/stupid question, but if you look back at my other post you will see that I'm full of them. I'm still learning, and the more I learn it seems like the less I know. :)

If I take my car on a little trip (2 or 3 hours) without an air filter would it hurt the engine?
I took the turbo kit off but haven't had time to take the intercooler off as of yet.
Only thing left on from the kit is the intercooler and the high volume fuel pump.

Reason I asked about taking my car out for a few hours without an air filter is because I want to re-create me and my girlfriends first date and ask her to marry me, and our first date was in that car, so it will make it more special.

So would it hurt my car riding it without a filter, even for a few hours?

Sorry for the long post.

yea not a good idea, but whatever filter you had use some of the intercooler pipping and toss the air filter on it and call it a day, and congrats.

yeah +1 on that. I learned the hard way years ago that no filter equals big trouble. I forgot to tighten the hose clamp on the intake and the filter ended up vibrating off. ended up blowing rods or bearings or something in the bottom end. I never really had the desire to pull it apart and see LOL. Granted that was 2 days with a daily commute of 25 miles, i still wouldnt think it would be a good idea though even if just for a few hours.

Theres probably alot more contaminets in the air then we know, and for the long(and possible short) term life of your motor, I'd say fab something up.

Do not under any circumstance do that. It will destroy everything, starting with the motor.

Stay single. :nono:

I'm hoping this is a joke.

You think your girlfriend / future wife is going to notice your air filter is missing? How do you think she's going to feel when you draw water into the MAS and ruin it or draw dirt into the engine, prompting a $1000+ engine rebuild?

Hope you got a good deal on the ring....

If it's dry out and you don't drive down any dusty roads, you'll be fine. If you're really worried, hit up the hardware store for some steel mesh and use a clamp to attach it.

yeah i agree. their is alot of dust even in city roads that gets kicked up that you dont see. with out an air filter you might as well put a bag of sand in your intake and call it a day.

only run without a airfilter if it's a track only car . cause if you do it might work for awhile but little duct/sand will f up your turbo propeller. And then take out your valves and valve seats and the rings that alot of dough$ but if your loaded do it at your own risk.

If you still remember your stock air box when you took it off it was probably full of all sorts of stuff in it(small gravel, grass, wasps, sand) roll the dice are you lucky?

I suppose the upside here is that the loss of a 420a wouldnt be quite as disterbing as demolishing a 4g63 because you were too lazy to buy a 10 dollar air filter.

Please use an air filter. I recommend using a stock one as they filter better. I used a K&N for a while..even cleaned and oiled it before I ever used it. I still sucked a few sand grains through the turbo and found some in the intercooler. The compressor blades have a few knicks on them but I cant really afford to down the car and have a new compressor wheel installed or balance the assembly. Fram air filters are made in the USA also!!

Thanks for all the comment guys. I'm going to take everyones advice and put an air filter on it, that is if I find a cheap one. The ring I brought her cleaned me out!!
I like 1983gsp's comment about using pantyhose and duck tape, and that is actually tempting.

Oh and thanks for the advice Defiant on staying single, but I dated her for almost 5 years and she put up with me and all my crap so she must really love me, plus I dont think I could live without her, even know I want to knock her up side the head sometimes. LoL

Oh and no one commented on putting an air filter on a intercooler and running it like that for a while instead of using a cold air intake. Which I couldnt afford anyway. LOL

Again, thanks for the help and saving me from ALOT of money, lord knows I spent enough already!

Yeah. Tell us about it after her lawyer's given her half your stuff.

Make sure you at least keep the air filter from her. As a reminder of romance. :thumb:
